\"\"Baku\/ Istanbul; 24 April 2021 – Turkey and Azerbaijan have took strong notice of US President Joe Biden’s remarks on the events of 1915\u00a0 and rejected them with presenting the facts from the past . <\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n

“The remarks are “unacceptable” and a “historical mistake,” Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev said on Saturday.<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n

Aliyev and Turkey’s President\u00a0Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan\u00a0condemned Biden’s move during a phone call, the Azerbaijani Presidency said in a statement.<\/h3>\n

The Azerbaijani leader said the US president’s remarks would “seriously damage cooperation in the region,” stressing that Baku will always stand by Ankara.<\/h3>\n

Aliyev’s statement came shortly after Biden called the events of 1915 an “Armenian genocide,” breaking American presidents’ long-held tradition of refraining from using the term.<\/h3>\n

Turkish authorities and leaders strongly rejected the assertion, with the Foreign Ministry saying that Biden’s statement lacks any scholarly or legal basis and is not supported by evidence.<\/h3>\n

Fahrettin Altun, Turkey’s communications director, said that US officials ignored history to bow down to the demands of lobbyists.<\/h3>\n

Turkey’s position on the events of 1915 is that the deaths of Armenians in eastern Anatolia took place when some sided with invading Russians and revolted against Ottoman forces. A subsequent relocation of Armenians resulted in numerous casualties.<\/h3>\n

Turkey objects to the presentation of these incidents as “genocide,” describing them as a tragedy in which both sides suffered casualties.<\/h3>\n

Ankara has repeatedly proposed the creation of a joint commission of historians from Turkey and Armenia as well as international experts to tackle the issue.<\/h3>\n

In 2014, then-Prime Minister Erdo\u011fan expressed condolences to the descendants of Armenians who lost their lives in the events of 1915.<\/h3>\n

“We have nothing to learn from anybody on our own past.\u00a0Political opportunism\u00a0is the greatest betrayal to peace and justice,” \u00c7avu\u015fo\u011flu said on Twitter. “We entirely reject this statement based\u00a0solely on populism.”<\/h3>\n

“Words cannot change or\u00a0rewrite history. Turkey has nothing to learn from anybody about its own past,” \u00c7avu\u015fo\u011flu stressed in a social media post.<\/h3>\n

Saying that\u00a0political opportunism\u00a0is the greatest\u00a0betrayal of peace\u00a0and justice, he stressed that Turkey totally rejects Biden’s statement.<\/h3>\n
