Unexpectedly, her talk turns back to love. She explains that she feels as though all her friends are finding partners, and she\u2019s not sure if that\u2019s what she wants.<\/h3>\n

\u201cI\u2019m slightly nervous,\u201d she tells me. \u201cEspecially [in terms of] thinking about relationships. You know, on social media, everyone\u2019s sharing their relationship stories, and you get worried\u2026\u201d About romantic relationships? I ask. \u201cYeah\u2026\u201d she says, thinking carefully. \u201cIf you can trust someone or not, [and] how can you be sure.\u201d<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n

RELATIONSHIP<\/h3>\n

And what about relationships? Did she meet someone at Oxford? She looks as though she\u2019s about to spontaneously combust from embarrassment. Pausing in horror, she finally offers, \u201cI would say that I have come across people who have been great, and I hope that I do find someone who understands me, respects me, and loves me and takes care of me.\u201d<\/h3>\n

I feel like I\u2019m torturing a kitten, and switch topic. Does she ever get star-struck? She tells me about meeting Brad Pitt. Was he really handsome? \u201cYeah!\u201d Malala giggles, covering her mouth with both hands.<\/h3>\n

LOVE AND MARRIAGE<\/h3>\n

Malala\u2019s parents had an \u201carranged love marriage\u201d, as she describes it \u2013 they liked the look of each other, and their parents worked out the rest. She isn\u2019t sure if she\u2019ll ever marry herself. \u201cI still don\u2019t understand why people have to get married. If you want to have a person in your life, why do you have to sign marriage papers, why can\u2019t it just be a partnership?\u201d Her mother \u2013 like most mothers \u2013 disagrees. \u201cMy mum is like,\u201d Malala laughs, \u201c\u2018Don\u2019t you dare say anything like that! You have to get married, marriage is beautiful.\u2019\u201d<\/h3>\n

MARRIAGE PROPOSALS<\/h3>\n

Meanwhile, Malala\u2019s father occasionally receives emails from prospective suitors in Pakistan. \u201cThe boy says that he has many acres of land and many houses and would love to marry me,\u201d she says, amused.<\/h3>\n

\u201cEven until my second year of university,\u201d she continues, \u201cI just thought, \u2018I\u2019m never going to get married, never going to have kids \u2013 just going to do my work. I\u2019m going to be happy and live with my family forever.\u2019\u201d She turns to me, full of revelation. \u201cI didn\u2019t realise that you\u2019re not the same person all the time. You change as well and you\u2019re growing.\u201d<\/h3>\n

POLITICS \/ PAKISTAN<\/h3>\n

Surely, I say, you could have more impact on the inside, as a politician. She smiles enigmatically: \u201cIt is not something I have rejected completely.\u201d Generally speaking, Malala avoids talking politics. Malala Fund operates in eight countries, and wading into politics could imperil its vital grassroots work.<\/h3>\n

But in February, she made an exception, after a Taliban member connected to her shooting, Ehsanullah Ehsan, escaped from prison and threatened her on Twitter. \u201cHow did he escape?\u201d Malala tweeted, tagging Prime Minister Imran Khan. \u201cHe has claimed responsibility for killing so many people,\u201d says Malala to me, frustration in her voice, \u201cand he was the spokesperson of a terrorist organisation, and people are just going to let it go, and allow it?<\/h3>\n

\u201cI do think before entering politics you should know what exactly you are there for, who you want to work with,\u201d she continues. \u201cYou know, all of the political parties that are there in Pakistan don\u2019t have a clean history. Do you defend them, do you not defend them? Do you change the political party? Do you form your own political party? Imran Khan did that, and it took him over 30 years.\u201d<\/h3>\n
