Trust in her , of her Father, Brother, Husband can improve her capacity to becoming a useful citizen of society. Inheritance of property from the parents is right of women. Government has made strict law in this regard. Women have to file an application only and the rest is the responsibility of the government and concerned departments. She said that government has punished many officers including high ranking for not implementing the law in its true spirit.

She stated this in a discussion hosted by Serena Hotels Islamabad on 10 Sep 2021. Serena Hotels, under its Public Diplomacy initiative Raabta, hosted an engaging panel discussion on the topic “Celebrating Female Role Models of Pakistan”at Islamabad Serena Hotel on Friday evening. The aim of the event was to honor women who have displayed exemplary talent, grit, commitment and professional excellence in their respective fields to make their mark, and become role models for the younger generation of women.

The diverse panel included Abida Malik, President of Behbud Association; Kashmala Tariq, Federal Ombudsperson for Protection against Harassment of Women at Workplaces; Alia Zafar, Group Head, People and Organizational Excellence at Bank of Punjab; Sarwat Majeed, the first female General Manager of Serena Hotels Asia; Dr. Muneeza Rizwan, Head of Dermatology at PAF Hospital and young female powerhouse singer Hadia Hashmi, who made her mark with her Nescafe Basement debut.

The panel held an interactive discussion titled “What it means to be an empowered woman in Pakistan” and shed light on factors impacting the professional and personal life of women, and the goals of women empowerment in the Pakistani context, as well as the role of change-makers, corporations and society at large in this quest.

Abida Malik said economic self reliance is basic thing for women empowerment. Our society generally does not attach any importance to the women if she is not economically sound. She said that women have no say in most of the households because they are dependent economically on males.

Alia Zafar advocated continued struggle for women empowerment. She said that power orientation is not well thought approach. This leads to extremism. Everyone should try to bring change in the society and change is coming.

Dr. Muneeza Rizwan recommended education for empowerment and further said that education gives you empowerment and respect as well. We have to sensitize the society not to be afraid of educated women. People should accept learned women.

Sarwat Majeed favored conducive atmosphere at home and at work place. She shared that 150 women are working under her supervision in GB. They look relaxed when they reach home place but seem disturbed while returning to their homes. It means they feel suppressed because of their situations at their homes.

Hadia Hashmi said that I have secured my repute by singing national songs only when my Papa gave me confidence for my performance. She noted that what a girl can not do that a boy can?

The speakers also discussed weather sex education should be imparted in educational institutions or not and whether women should have sovereignty on their body or not? Both are big taboos in Pakistani society.

The Women Role Models did not elaborate both topics but few of them favored debate to reach any conclusion. They said that children should be trained that no one should touch their private parts.

The event was held as part of Raabta, a Public Diplomacy Initiative of Serena Hotels that aims to curate conversations with experts, policy-makers and the interested citizenry in order to create knowledge, and develop a wider appreciation of socio-economic subjects relevant to our society.

The discussion was moderated by Ms. Sidra Iqbal, a prominent broadcast journalist and curator of Raabta. The speakers appreciated the efforts of CEO Aziz Boolani for raising debate on social issues and providing a plat form to discuss the problems and find their solutions.

The audience included participants from the government, corporate and diplomatic sectors and civil society who also interacted with the panelists during the Q&A session.

Note from the Editor ; For empowerment of women, basic thing is their Identity. That means they exist. Millions of young girls and women do not have ID cards. It means they do not exist. They can not appear for jobs, can’t open accounts in banks, can’t claim property share in inheritance.

NADRA mobile teams should reach to such marginalized women and prepare their ID cards at their doorsteps. Moreover the process of ID card should be made easiest at the offices of NADRA where women have to weight for hours outside for their turn. Then fee structure also needs to be reviewed. It should be more and more cheaper than the existing one that is exploitation only.

NADRA should assure the registration of names of both the father and the husband on the ID cards of women with the ID card numbers of both the father and the husband.
