Between them, they are holding more than half of the world\u2019s imprisoned journalists.<\/span><\/h5>\n<h5>The sentences passed on women journalists broke records in 2023. The victims included <strong>Elaheh Mohammadi<\/strong> and <strong>Niloofar Hamedi<\/strong>, sentenced to 12 and 13 years in prison respectively in Iran. They included <strong>Maryna Zolatava, Liudmila Chekina<\/strong> and <strong>Valeriya Kastsiuhova<\/strong>, icons of independent journalism in Belarus, whose sentences ranged from 10 to 12 years. And they included Burundi\u2019s <strong>Floriane Irangabiye<\/strong>, one of the few women journalists jailed in sub-Saharan Africa, who was given a 10-year sentence.<\/h5>\n<h5>Thanks to your help, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) continues to <strong>deploy appropriate strategies to help obtain their release<\/strong>. Fewer journalists have been imprisoned this year than last. It\u2019s also a journalist who will be intimidated in the future. And it\u2019s hundreds or even thousands of colleagues feeing the threat of imprisonment hanging over them. So, the right to news and information of millions could be violated. <strong>Behind these statistics, there are human tragedies and political consequences.<\/strong><\/h5>\n<div id=\"content-node\">\n<h5><strong>Arbitrary imprisonment of journalists is widely used in many countries to suppress the right to news and information. Nearly 800 journalists were jailed at some point in 2023 and almost 550 will spend the start of 2024 in prison. Nearly half of them are detained in just four countries \u2013 China, Myanmar, Belarus and Vietnam. <\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-contenu-editorial field--type-entity-reference-revisions field--label-hidden field__items\">\n<div class=\"field__item\">\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--media paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"wrapper-media medium\">\n<article class=\"media media--type-iframe media--view-mode-default\">\n<div class=\"wrapper-iframe flourish_player\" data-desktop-height=\"600\" data-tablette-height=\"600\" data-mobile-height=\"600\">\n<div class=\"tac_activate tac_activate_flourish_rsf\">\n<h5 class=\"tac_float\">Imprisonment is used to persecute journalists in nearly half of the world\u2019s countries. In the last five years, at least one journalist has been detained in connection with their work in 86 countries.<\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--texte-riche paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-texte-riche field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<h5>A total of 779 journalists were jailed at some point in 2023 and 547 are currently in prison or under house arrest in a total of 45 countries. The prison sentences passed on journalists this year ranged from one week to 20 years.<\/h5>\n<h5>China continues to be the world\u2019s biggest jailer of journalists \u2013 with 121 currently detained. No women journalist had been sentenced to more than 10 years in prison since 2019, but six of the eight longest sentences in 2023 were passed on women journalists.<\/h5>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Iran,<\/strong><\/span> They are being subjected to appalling persecution in Iran, where <strong>Elaheh Mohammadi<\/strong> and <strong>Niloofar Hamedi<\/strong> were sentenced to 12 and 13 years in prison,<\/h5>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Belarus,<\/strong><\/span> where Alexander Lukashenko\u2019s authoritarian government gave independent journalism icons <strong>Maryna Zolatava<\/strong>, <strong>Liudmila Chekina<\/strong> and <strong>Valeriya Kastsiuhova<\/strong> jail terms ranging from 10 to 12 years,<\/h5>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Burundi,<\/strong><\/span> where <strong>Floriane Irangabiye<\/strong>, one of the few women journalists jailed in sub-Saharan Africa, is serving a 10-year sentence.<\/h5>\n<h5 class=\"field field--name-field-auteur field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Christophe Deloire, RSF secretary-general said;<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field__item\">\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--citation paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><em>\u201cEach journalist in prison is by definition a journalist prevented from working. But it\u2019s also a journalist who will be intimidated in the future. And It\u2019s hundreds or even thousands of colleagues feeling a threat hanging over their head. So, the right to news and information of millions of people could be violated. Behind these statistics, there are human tragedies and political consequences. I salute the courage of all these journalists, women and men, who have dared to brave the dangers imposed by authoritarian governments.
