RSF has urged Pakistan\u2019s new federal and provincial authorities to adopt urgent measures to address the signs of an alarming deterioration in press freedom since they took office three months ago.<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<h5>Pakistan authorities may have different point of view in this regard. That point of view should be shared to RSF and with Pakistani press as well. Here it is pertinent to recall the latest statement issued by the Council of Pakistan Newspapers Editors CPNE. <span class=\"ILfuVd\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"hgKElc\">The Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE), only a couple of weeks ago,vehemently rejected the controversial Defamation Bill 2024 passed by the Punjab Assembly, denouncing it as a serious assault on press freedom and branding it a &#8220;black law&#8221;.<\/span><\/span><\/h5>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"5bufgSwL0r\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/pakistanintheworld.pk\/live\/cpne-islamabad-seeks-amendments-in-defamation-bill-2024-passed-in-punjab-assembly\/\">CPNE Islamabad Seeks Amendments in Defamation Bill 2024 Passed in Punjab Assembly<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;CPNE Islamabad Seeks Amendments in Defamation Bill 2024 Passed in Punjab Assembly&#8221; &#8212; Pakistan In the World\" src=\"https:\/\/pakistanintheworld.pk\/live\/cpne-islamabad-seeks-amendments-in-defamation-bill-2024-passed-in-punjab-assembly\/embed\/#?secret=rRTC5YBoDm#?secret=5bufgSwL0r\" data-secret=\"5bufgSwL0r\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h5 dir=\"ltr\">CPNE touched a bill only but here RSF has issued its report that allege more strict measures and actions and the worst is the murder of journalists. RSF raises the question, &#8220;What with murders of journalists, an enforced disappearance, arbitrary detention, censorship and\u00a0 social media blocking, everything points to a very disturbing decline in press freedom in the first three months since the new federal and provincial governments took over at the start of March following elections in February.&#8221;<\/h5>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em><strong>Editor Tazeen Akhtar commented on RSF report as<\/strong><\/em><\/span> , &#8220;One very important point can be noted here that Pakistani authorities especially the top slots of civil and armed forces are being hit and humiliated at social media that is still highly irresponsible media in Pakistan. More strict laws and rules are mainly meant for this media and not for mainstream media \/ press as both are doing their work with responsibility , not hitting below the belt in the name of press freedom or freedom of expression.&#8221;<\/h5>\n<h5 dir=\"ltr\"><strong>C\u00e9lia Mercier, <\/strong>Head of RSF\u2019s South Asia desk says;<\/h5>\n<h5 dir=\"ltr\"><em>\u201cThe many press freedom violations reveal a climate of violence and a determination to censor that has little in common with the\u00a0<\/em><em><u>undertakings<\/u><\/em><em>\u00a0given by the political parties in their elections campaign manifestos, and the\u00a0<\/em><em><u>message<\/u><\/em><em> of support for journalists by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The strategy of suppressing critical voices is becoming ever more visible, amid claims that the results of the election were tainted by fraud and continuing army interference in politics.&#8221;<\/em><\/h5>\n<h5 dir=\"ltr\"><em>&#8220;Pakistan remains one of the world\u2019s most dangerous countries for media personnel, and the level of impunity for murders of journalists is appalling. RSF reiterates its call to Pakistan\u2019s new leaders at the national and provincial level to adopt urgent measures to restore press freedom, <\/em><strong>C\u00e9lia Mercier adds.<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h5 dir=\"ltr\"><strong><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-30507\" src=\"https:\/\/pakistanintheworld.pk\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Celia-_Mercier.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"234\" height=\"259\" \/>Murders of journalists\u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5 dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Kamran Dawar<\/strong>, a freelance journalist in the northwestern district of North Waziristan who ran a YouTube\u00a0<a title=\"channel - ouverture dans un nouvel onglet\" href=\"https:\/\/rsf.us7.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=5cb8824c726d51483ba41891e&amp;id=4d84a1b03a&amp;e=10c4d6b1bc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/rsf.us7.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3D5cb8824c726d51483ba41891e%26id%3D4d84a1b03a%26e%3D10c4d6b1bc&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1717872923628000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3pCLRbGfDpmIvEwDl4t_v_\"><u>channel<\/u><\/a>\u00a0and a Facebook TV news channel called\u00a0<a title=\"Waziristan TV - ouverture dans un nouvel onglet\" href=\"https:\/\/rsf.us7.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=5cb8824c726d51483ba41891e&amp;id=7cc1979d3c&amp;e=10c4d6b1bc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/rsf.us7.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3D5cb8824c726d51483ba41891e%26id%3D7cc1979d3c%26e%3D10c4d6b1bc&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1717872923628000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1sjQDwTWO4eykx6vbY0kQO\"><u>Waziristan TV<\/u><\/a>, was murdered on 21 May, just weeks after telling colleagues he feared for his safety.<\/h5>\n<h5 dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rsf.us7.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=5cb8824c726d51483ba41891e&amp;id=f384ce2d16&amp;e=10c4d6b1bc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/rsf.us7.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3D5cb8824c726d51483ba41891e%26id%3Df384ce2d16%26e%3D10c4d6b1bc&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1717872923628000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3npuM-Lp0xLEOFyIisng6s\"><strong><u>Nasrullah Gadani<\/u><\/strong><\/a>, a reporter for the\u00a0<em>Awami Awaz<\/em>\u00a0newspaper in the southern province of Sindh who criticised the feudal system in his region, was riddled with bullets by gunmen on a motorcycle the same day, and died of his injuries three days later.<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h5 dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Abduction by intelligence agents\u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5 dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Ali Ahmed Farhad Shah<\/strong>, a freelance journalist and poet who is very critical of the army and who comes from Azad Kashmir, the Pakistani part of the northeastern Jammu and Kashmir region, was abducted from his home in the capital, Islamabad, on 15 May. After his wife filed a legal petition, the Azad Kashmir police finally revealed that they were holding Shah because he had shared \u201cprovocative material\u201d on Facebook during protests in the region \u2013 in which he did not participate because he was in Islamabad. An anti-terrorism court in Muzaffarabad, Azad Kashmir\u2019s capital, rejected a request for his release on bail on 4 June.<\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(Here RSF has not observed the follow up that he is free now and no evidence of his abduction by any intelligence agency has been pleaded or proved in the concerned court. Moreover he is a poet and not a journalist.)<\/span><\/h5>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"KRM9FximFI\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/pakistanintheworld.pk\/live\/cpne-asks-govt-to-stop-economic-murder-of-the-journalists\/\">CPNE asks Govt. to stop economic murder of the journalists<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;CPNE asks Govt. to stop economic murder of the journalists&#8221; &#8212; Pakistan In the World\" src=\"https:\/\/pakistanintheworld.pk\/live\/cpne-asks-govt-to-stop-economic-murder-of-the-journalists\/embed\/#?secret=ocuaD1Em8e#?secret=KRM9FximFI\" data-secret=\"KRM9FximFI\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h5 dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Arbitrary detentions, press clubs harassed<\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5 dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Sher Afgan<\/strong>, a journalist with the\u00a0<em>Bol News<\/em>\u00a0TV channel who is the president of the press club\u00a0in Dera Ghazi Khan, a city in Punjab province, and\u00a0<strong>Ghulam Mustafa<\/strong>, a reporter for the\u00a0<em>Daily Ausaf<\/em>\u00a0newspaper and president of the Anjuman-e-Sahafyan (Union of Journalists), were detained on 7 May for objecting to a police raid on the press club during a press conference by supporters of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the party of imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan.<\/h5>\n<h5 dir=\"ltr\">On 18 May, police surrounded the press club in Quetta, the capital of the southwestern province of Balochistan, to prevent a Baloch group from holding a press conference about enforced disappearances.<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h5 dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Trumped-up charges against journalists forced to flee abroad<\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5 dir=\"ltr\">An absurd case against two journalists who have had to flee to the United States was\u00a0<a title=\"revived - ouverture dans un nouvel onglet\" href=\"https:\/\/rsf.us7.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=5cb8824c726d51483ba41891e&amp;id=a15ed1d2fe&amp;e=10c4d6b1bc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/rsf.us7.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3D5cb8824c726d51483ba41891e%26id%3Da15ed1d2fe%26e%3D10c4d6b1bc&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1717872923628000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1zTi7s123lJeV3rzrLRC6c\"><u>revived<\/u><\/a>\u00a0by an anti-terrorism court in Islamabad at the end of May.
