It is affecting the social, economic and political landscape of the country and having dreadful implications.

Brain drain refers to the skilled class and professionals who leave a country in search of better opportunities in other states in order to raise their standards of living. Last year, almost 92,000 highly educated doctors, engineers and IT experts left the Pakistan and settled overseas for improve their lives.

According to the Bureau of Immigration and Overseas, majority of Pakistani workers went to the Middle Eastern Countries and almost 500 people even went to African states such as Sudan, which shows the aggravating situation of Pakistan.

There are certain factors behind this upsetting change in the country which should be highlighted.

First of all, the incessant political chaos has brought uncertainty. The musical chair for power leaves little room to allow progressive and welfare-oriented policies to prevail.

Likewise, due to the presence of dynastic politics, merit and competence fail to hold their position in different sectors. This is the reason why talent faces disappointment.

Secondly, the impotent law and order fails to provide people a sense of security.

The life of a common man has become quite vulnerable in urban areas owing to the ineffective security measures. Moreover, the resurgence of terrorism in the country over the recent years have shaken the investors’ confidence. The biggest example is the inefficient growth of China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) because of the aggravating security conditions.

THE STAGGERING ECONOMY OF PAKISTAN – by – Jasia Khan

Lastly, the productive opportunities, in the country, to excel in diverse fields are missing. Within the incumbent years, the unemployment rate has increased; thousands of university graduates are sitting idle because of no opportunities to avail.

According to the Pakistan Economic Survey 2024 report, people between the ages 16 to 25 face the highest unemployment rate. Thus, to grab dynamic skills and experience, they depart the country and start serving in other states.

Therefore, to avoid brain drain, the state should take some pragmatic actions. At first, the security conditions should be upgraded through essential police training including the community-policing and improved surveillance system, as feeling safe and secure is the right of every citizen. Elimination of terror activities can boost the confidence of the investors (both domestic and foreign) which can improve the economic conditions.

Similarly, it is extremely important to give the educated graduates a platform to unlock their potential. Multiple paid internships and economic opportunities should be provided to the youth to polish their skills so that, they stay in the country and work towards its betterment.

Last but not the least, the element of corruption and favoritism should be eliminated. This would save more room for competent, and talented minds to take the charge. This would attract the people with effective capabilities to serve the institutions and they will remain dedicated to the country.

As an analyst Dr. Asif states,“Countries thrive when they harness the potential of their brightest minds”

Pakistan in the World – October 2024

Jasia Khan is a graduate in English Literature from University of Sindh/a CSS aspirant/ jasiahameed2016@gmail.com Brain drain has become an unavoidable reality in Pakistan which is quite alarming.
