Other speakers included Ms. Amina Khan, Director, CAMEA, Ambassador Asif Durrani, Pakistan\u2019s former Special Representative on Afghanistan, Mr. Kawa Hassan, Non-resident Fellow with Stimson\u2019s Middle East program, Mr. Haroon Sharif, former Minister and Chairman BOI, Michael Kugelman, Director of the South Asia Institute at the Wilson Center in Washington, D.C. and Mr. Leo Wigger, Associate Partner, Candid Foundation, Germany.<\/h5>\n<h5><strong>Ms. Amina Khan,<\/strong> in her welcome remarks stated that the regional strategic landscape has been fundamentally reshaped by 3 major factors: great power competition; events in neighbouring Afghanistan as well as regional connectivity in South and Central Asia. The war in Gaza and its military and diplomatic support has exposed the major powers, with Israel being let off with impunity.<\/h5>\n<h5>She further said that South Asia has suffered due to a lack of good bilateral relationships. Pakistan\u00a0 and collectively the region has not performed well in addressing the challenges. Countries that do not learn from their mistakes are continuously suffering and history and geography are two constants that cannot be changed, she concluded.<\/h5>\n<h5><strong>Ambassador Asif Durrani,<\/strong> speaking on \u2018Sustainable Peace and Security in Post-Taliban Afghanistan\u2019 highlighted Afghanistan&#8217;s fragile stability under the Taliban rule, marked by dire economic conditions and widespread poverty.<\/h5>\n<h5>While noting governance improvements like reduced corruption and counter-narcotics efforts, he criticized the Taliban&#8217;s ban on women\u2019s education and work, which have drawn international condemnation and deepened their isolation.<\/h5>\n<h5>He warned that this isolation enables terrorist groups like <strong>ISKP and TTP<\/strong> to exploit Afghan soil, posing regional and global threats. Emphasizing a regional approach, he called for Pakistan to play a pivotal role by initiating counterterrorism dialogue with the Taliban and addressing India\u2019s destabilizing actions, such as financing terrorist groups through Afghan proxies.<\/h5>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"AIQrWdb3eZ\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/pakistanintheworld.pk\/live\/minister-planning-outlines-5-strategic-priorities-for-pakistan-to-secure-its-place-in-the-evolving-global-order\/\">Minister Planning outlines 5 Strategic Priorities for Pakistan to secure its place in the Evolving Global Order<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Minister Planning outlines 5 Strategic Priorities for Pakistan to secure its place in the Evolving Global Order&#8221; &#8212; Pakistan In the World\" src=\"https:\/\/pakistanintheworld.pk\/live\/minister-planning-outlines-5-strategic-priorities-for-pakistan-to-secure-its-place-in-the-evolving-global-order\/embed\/#?secret=Z3zhK3ovNB#?secret=AIQrWdb3eZ\" data-secret=\"AIQrWdb3eZ\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h5><strong>Kawa Hassan,<\/strong> while talking about \u2018Geopolitical Shifts in the Middle East,\u2019 emphasized the transformative impact of recent events in the Middle East, including the October 7th and the November 27th events. He described <em><strong>Hamas&#8217; actions as a strategic miscalculation, resulting in devastating consequences for Palestinians.<\/strong> <\/em><\/h5>\n<h5>While Israel, supported by the U.S. has weakened Hamas and Iran\u2019s <strong>&#8220;Axis of Resistance.&#8221;<\/strong> He also warned that the military gains are meaningless without resolving the Palestinian statehood issue. Major challenges remain, such as Gaza\u2019s destruction and lack of support from major powers.<\/h5>\n<h5><strong>Haroon Sharif,<\/strong> while shedding light on \u2018Leveraging Economic Connectivity in West Asia\u2019, stated that there are multiple powerful economic countries in Asia at present. Physical proximity is an economic advantage, especially after Covid. The economic geography continues to overtake the political geography. He further stated that connectivity alone does not pay dividends, unless backed by private capital and institutions.<\/h5>\n<h5><strong>Michael Kugelman,<\/strong> while speaking about<strong> \u2018Non-Traditional Threats and Challenges\u2019<\/strong>, opined that climate change is a very serious threat for Pakistan, who is a light contributor to climate change.<\/h5>\n<h5>He further said that climate change is a serious issue and deserves so much more attention than it gets and can be best described as the current crisis in multilateralism that is playing out in South Asia and beyond globally.<\/h5>\n<h5><strong>Leo Wigger,<\/strong> while expressing his views on \u2018Enhancing Trade and Connectivity in South Asia\u2019 was of the view that South Asia is one of the least connected sub-regions in the world.
