\"\"ISLAMABAD: 11 Dec 2024 – Embassy of Kyrgyzstan hosted an event to commemorate International Mountain Day and International Snow Leopard Day, emphasising the critical role of mountain ecosystems in combating climate change and fostering sustainable development.<\/h5>\n
The event, presided over by Ambassador of Kyrgyzstan Avazbek Atakhanov, brought together diplomats, environmental experts, academics, journalists, and civil society representatives to discuss the challenges and opportunities related to mountain conservation and the role of Kyrgyzstan.<\/h5>\n
In his opening remarks, the Ambassador of Kyrgyzstan highlighted that Kyrgyzstan has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to mountain conservation, aligning with the 2024 International Mountain Day theme: \u201cMountain solutions for a sustainable future \u2013 innovation, adaptation, and youth.\u201d<\/h5>\n
\u00a0<\/strong>The nation has implemented innovative strategies to address climate change impacts on its mountainous regions, integrating technological advancements and traditional knowledge systems. Kyrgyzstan actively engages its youth in environmental initiatives, fostering a generation dedicated to sustainable mountain development.\"\"<\/h5>\n
Internationally, Kyrgyzstan collaborates with global partners to share best practices and mobilize collective action, reinforcing its role as a leader in promoting sustainable and resilient futures for mountain communities and ecosystems.<\/h5>\n
The Ambassador has also highlighted the urgency of addressing the climate crisis, particularly its disproportionate impacts on mountain ecosystems.<\/h5>\n
\u201cMountains are not just physical landmarks but lifelines for nearly 20% of the world\u2019s population. They provide freshwater, regulate our climate, and serve as cultural and spiritual sanctuaries,\u201d he said. \u201cThe accelerated retreat of glaciers threatens livelihoods and poses significant risks to global water, energy, and food security. It is imperative that we act now.\u201d\"\"<\/h5>\n
The ambassador also read the message of President Sadyr Japarov on this important day, where the President has called on the international community to step up support for mountainous countries where glaciers are melting due to climate change. The president has also highlighted that no country can cope with climate change alone and alone. There is a strong need to work in a collective manner.<\/h5>\n
The ambassador also highlighted that Kyrgyzstan has been playing its part in contributing meaningfully to global efforts toward mitigating risk; however, the country is also facing challenges like the rest of the world. The ambassador has shared that globally, there are 10 countries that are more than 60 per cent more mountainous in their terrain than other countries.<\/h5>\n
Ambassdor also highlighted the interconnectedness of mountain regions with broader global challenges. \u201cThe cryosphere impacts all of us, from the mountains of the Himalayas to the shores of the Pacific. Climate change knows no borders, and neither should our commitment to addressing it. We must ensure that international climate finance flows to the regions and communities that need it most,\u201d the ambassador urged.<\/h5>\n
