\"\"Brussels, 15 November 2019-<\/span><\/u>The\u00a010th<\/sup><\/span>\u00a0session\u00a0of the<\/span>\u00a0European Union-Pakistan<\/span>\u00a0Joint Commission<\/span>\u00a0was held in\u00a0Brussels\u00a0on<\/span>\u00a015\u00a0November 2019.\u00a0The plenary of the Joint Commission<\/span>\u00a0was preceded by sub-group meetings on trade; development<\/span>\u00a0cooperation; and democracy,\u00a0governance,\u00a0rule\u00a0of law and\u00a0human\u00a0rights on\u00a013-14\u00a0November 2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/u><\/u><\/h4>\n

The two sides appreciated\u00a0the\u00a0signing of the\u00a0EU\u2013Pakistan\u00a0Strategic Engagement Plan (SEP)<\/span>\u00a0in June 2019\u00a0and\u00a0expressed commitment for\u00a0its\u00a0early<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0full implementation\u00a0including\u00a0the\u00a0establishment of a Security Dialogue,\u00a0working towards a comprehensive dialogue on migration and mobility, and\u00a0further expanding\u00a0relations<\/span>\u00a0in the areas of\u00a0connectivity,\u00a0climate change and energy, education and culture, and science and technology.\u00a0<\/span><\/u><\/u><\/h4>\n

The Joint Commission<\/span>\u00a0provided an opportunity to exchange views on\u00a0all main areas of\u00a0cooperation\u00a0between the EU and Pakistan.\u00a0<\/span><\/u><\/u><\/h4>\n

In the\u00a0area of trade,\u00a0implementation of GSP<\/span>\u00a0Plus,<\/span>\u00a0issues hampering trade and investment,\u00a0and\u00a0improving the business climate\u00a0remained\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0focus of discussions.\u00a0On development\u00a0cooperation, the parties\u00a0appreciated\u00a0the encouraging progress of ongoing activities and exchanged views and priorities concerning cooperation beyond\u00a02020.\u00a0During the discussions in the sub group on\u00a0democracy, governance, rule of law\u00a0and\u00a0human rights, the two sides reaffirmed their strong support for democratic institutions, rule of law, good governance, the promotion and protection of human rights, labour rights, and, fundamental freedoms.\u00a0Both sides emphasised the importance of the implementation of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) Action Plan by Pakistan. The Pakistan side appreciated the EU’s offer of technical assistance in this regard.<\/span><\/u><\/u><\/h4>\n

Pakistan briefed\u00a0the\u00a0EU\u00a0side\u00a0on the recent developments<\/span>\u00a0in the region and highlighted\u00a0its concerns regarding\u00a0the human rights and humanitarian situation in Indian controlled Jammu\u00a0and\u00a0Kashmir.\u00a0<\/span><\/u><\/u><\/h4>\n

The\u00a0parties discussed\u00a0the\u00a0different aspects of migration management,\u00a0stressed the importance of the\u00a0full and effective implementation of the\u00a0EU\u2013Pakistan Readmission Agreement\u00a0(EURA), and\u00a0underlined\u00a0that\u00a0the\u00a0Re-admission Case Management System (RCMS)\u00a0is of high importance in this regard.\u00a0<\/span><\/u><\/u><\/h4>\n

The EU recognised the challenges faced by Pakistan in handling the most protracted refugee situation. The EU assured continuation of its cooperation and assistance, working towards durable solutions for Afghan refugees and their host communities in the region, including the promotion of voluntary, safe,\u00a0and dignified return\u00a0to\u00a0Afghanistan.\u00a0The\u00a0two sides\u00a0also agreed to payincreasing attention to\u00a0the\u00a0humanitarian response to natural disasters.\u00a0<\/span><\/u><\/u><\/h4>\n

The Joint Commission was co-chaired on the EU side by\u00a0Mr\u00a0Gunnar Wiegand, Managing Director for Asia and the Pacific in the European External Action Service\u00a0and on the Pakistan side by\u00a0Mr\u00a0Noor\u00a0Ahmed, Secretary of Economic Affairs Division\u00a0(EAD).\u00a0Representatives of the European Commission,\u00a0observers from<\/span>\u00a0EU Member States, as well as\u00a0from Pakistan\u00a0Ministries of Foreign Affairs,\u00a0Commerce, EAD and\u00a0Human Rights\u00a0participated in the meeting.<\/span><\/u><\/u><\/h4>\n

The next session of the Joint Commission will be held in Islamabad in 2020.\u00a0<\/span><\/u><\/u><\/h4>\n

The two parties<\/span>\u00a0undertook\u00a0to\u00a0hold the next political dialogue in Islamabad that would contribute\u00a0towards the EU-Pakistan Strategic Dialogue\u00a0at\u00a0High Representative\/Foreign Minister\u00a0level\u00a0at mutually agreed dates\u00a0in Brussels.<\/span><\/h4>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
