Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, Secretary-General of ASEAN <\/strong>has\u00a0acknowledged Pakistan\u2019s long-standing role as ASEAN\u2019s first Sectoral Dialogue Partner and welcomed the growing economic and institutional ties between both sides. He emphasized Pakistan\u2019s contributions to peace, development, and regional connectivity, and expressed support for deepening cooperation under the ASEAN-Pakistan Practical Cooperation Areas 2024\u20132028.<\/p>\n<p>He said this in his online video message at the roundtable by The China-Pakistan Study Centre (CPSC) of the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI), in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) and the ASEAN Committee in Islamabad (ACI), commemorated 58th ASEAN Day with a special Roundtable titled \u201cPakistan and ASEAN: Partners in Peace, Progress, and Regional Prosperity\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Roundtable brought together Heads of Mission of ASEAN member states in Islamabad, Pakistan\u2019s Ambassadors\/ High Commissioners posted in ASEAN capitals, and senior officials from Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Ambassador Imran Ahmed Siddiqui, Additional Foreign Secretary (Asia Pacific), was the Chief Guest. Ambassador Sohail Mahmood, Director General ISSI, delivered welcome remarks, while Dr. Talat Shabbir, Director CPSC, moderated the session.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-50384 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/pakistanintheworld.pk\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/ASEAN-ISSI-e1754587302936.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"205\" \/>In his remarks, Ambassador Sohail Mahmood highlighted Pakistan\u2019s commitment to a deeper, mutually-beneficial partnership with ASEAN. He appreciated the collaboration of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the ASEAN Committee in Islamabad (ACI) in organizing the RoundTable Dialogue.<\/p>\n<p>Highlighting ASEAN\u2019s transformation into a global economic powerhouse with a GDP exceeding $4.2 trillion, he lauded its resilience, unity, and commitment to peace, stability, inclusive growth, economic integration and socio-cultural collaboration. He emphasized ASEAN\u2019s newly adopted Community Vision 2045 as a timely blueprint to address global challenges and realize the new opportunities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Ambassador Mahmood noted a 23% growth in Pakistan-ASEAN trade in 2024 and stressed the potential for synergies with CPEC and RCEP.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>( The Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) is the world&#8217;s largest free trade agreement.\u00a0It was signed in 2020 and came into force in 2022, uniting 15 Asia-Pacific economies, including China, Japan, South Korea, and the 10 ASEAN member states.\u00a0RCEP aims to reduce trade barriers and foster closer economic ties among its members.)<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"zBEyFnuJwM\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/pakistanintheworld.pk\/live\/deepening-asean-pakistan-ties-a-philippine-perspective-by-dr-emmanuel-r-fernandez-ambassador\/\">Deepening ASEAN-Pakistan Ties : A Philippine Perspective &#8211; by Dr. Emmanuel R. He highlighted ISSI\u2019s contributions, including the establishment of the \u2018ASEAN Corner\u2019 and the special ASEAN issue of PIVOT magazine. Calling ASEAN a pillar of dialogue and stability, he reiterated Pakistan\u2019s quest for a Full Dialogue Partner status and reaffirmed ISSI\u2019s commitment to advancing Pakistan-ASEAN cooperation through dedicated research, dialogue, and strategic engagement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>H.E. Mr. Wunna Han, Ambassador of Myanmar and Acting Chair of ACI,<\/strong> lauded progress in Pakistan-ASEAN cooperation, urged continued support for ASEAN Vision 2045 and key initiatives, and shared thoughts on ways to further elevate the ASEAN-Pakistan partnership.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ASEAN Heads of Missions,<\/strong> Malaysia H.E Mohammad Azhar Mazlan, Brunei Darussalam H.E Colonel (Retd) Pengiran Haji Kamal Bashah Bin Pengiran Haji Ahmad , Vietnam H.E Pham Anh Tuan, the Philippines H.E Dr Emmanuel R. Fernandes, Indonesia H.E Chandra Warsenanto Sukotjo , Thailand Ms Kamolwan Sriposil and Cambodia, shared perspectives on advancing collaboration in political, economic, security, and socio-cultural spheres.<\/p>\n<p>They appreciated Pakistan\u2019s continued engagement with ASEAN frameworks and reiterated support for a deeper and enhanced partnership between Pakistan and ASEAN.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pakistan\u2019s Heads of Mission posted in ASEAN capitals made important interventions.<\/strong> They highlighted progress on Practical Cooperation Areas, growing bilateral engagements, and identified new avenues for collaboration in areas such as Fintech, digital economy, sustainable development, trade, tourism, and cultural diplomacy. They emphasized the need for institutional linkages and high-level exchanges to broaden ASEAN-Pakistan ties, and expressed confidence in the potential of this partnership to contribute to regional peace and prosperity.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-50383\" src=\"https:\/\/pakistanintheworld.pk\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/ASEAN-Pakistan-ISSI-e1754587227954.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"357\" \/>Chief Guest Ambassador Imran Siddiqui<\/strong> reiterated Pakistan\u2019s commitment to ASEAN under the Vision East Asia policy. He emphasized ASEAN\u2019s importance as a model for regional cooperation and highlighted Pakistan\u2019s diplomatic presence in nine ASEAN capitals.<\/p>\n<p>He noted the opportunities for deepening integration through initiatives such as CPEC, regional connectivity, capacity building, and people-centric development. Ambassador Imran Siddiqui called for Pakistan\u2019s elevation to <strong>Full Dialogue Partner<\/strong> status, emphasizing: \u201cPakistan views its partnership with ASEAN as a convergence of strategic destiny. The time, we believe, has come to graduate this engagement to the level of Full Dialogue Partnership, an evolution justified by visions, history and aspiration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In his concluding remarks, <strong>Ambassador Khalid Mahmood,<\/strong> Chairman BoG ISSI, highlighted ASEAN\u2019s remarkable journey as one of the most successful regional organizations and reaffirmed Pakistan\u2019s active engagement with ASEAN and its related forums.<\/p>\n<p>He expressed hope for Pakistan\u2019s elevation to Full Dialogue Partner status to further deepen bilateral cooperation.
