ISLAMABAD : Kazakhstan\u2019s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev called for comprehensive UN reform, stronger global cooperation, and urgent steps toward peace, sustainability, and digital equity in a time of mounting instability during the Sept. 23 General Debate of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.<\/p>\n
UN must adapt to today\u2019s realities, Tokayev urges<\/b><\/p>\n
In his statement, President Tokayev underscored the urgent need for a comprehensive reform of the UN system. Reflecting on the institution\u2019s eight-decade legacy, Tokayev acknowledged the UN\u2019s central role in addressing global challenges \u2013 but warned that the current crisis of trust in multilateral institutions must not be ignored.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe must also face the truth: the world around us has changed profoundly \u2013 and, unfortunately, not for the better,\u201d the President said, calling for the UN to become more \u201cadjustable to the realities of today\u2019s unpredictable world.\u201d<\/p>\n
Security \u0421ouncil reform<\/b><\/p>\n
Tokayev emphasized that UN reform is not a matter for \u201cendless contemplations\u201d but a \u201cstrategic necessity.\u201d\u00a0A central pillar of this bold effort, he argued, should be reform of the UN Security Council. President Tokayev called for greater representation of major powers from Asia, Africa, and Latin America on a rotational basis, as well as an amplified role for responsible Middle Powers.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey can act as bridges within the UN when major powers are divided,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Tokayev also proposed the creation of a dedicated team to present concrete reform ideas, stressing the need to uphold the founding principles of the UN Charter, including sovereignty, territorial integrity, and peaceful dispute resolution, without selective application.<\/p>\n
Addressing global conflicts<\/b><\/p>\n
Turning to conflict zones, Tokayev expressed Kazakhstan\u2019s concern over the ongoing Ukrainian crisis and the humanitarian disaster in Gaza.<\/p>\n
\u201cTerritorial disputes are never easy to resolve and require mutual restraint and responsibility for the sake of future generations,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
On Gaza, Tokayev called for the full protection of civilians and compliance with international humanitarian law, reiterating Kazakhstan\u2019s support for a two-state solution with the UN playing a central role.<\/p>\n
President Tokayev also welcomed successful diplomatic mediation in the South Caucasus, pointing to the normalization of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia\u00a0under the mediation of the United States\u2019 President.<\/p>\n
