REUTERS\/Kemal Aslan &#8211; RC2APE9EKYR1<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) \u2014 Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said \u201ca thousand no\u2019s\u201d to the Mideast peace plan announced Tuesday by President Donald Trump, which strongly favors Israel.<\/p>\n<p>The Palestinians remain committed to ending the Israeli occupation and establishing a state with its capital in east Jerusalem, Abbas said at a news conference in the West Bank city of Ramallah, where the Western-backed Palestinian Authority is headquartered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter the nonsense that we heard today we say a thousand no\u2019s to the Deal of The Century,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The plan would create a Palestinian state in parts of the West Bank, but would allow Israel to annex its settlements in the occupied territory. The plan would allow the Palestinians to establish a capital on the outskirts of east Jerusalem but would leave most of the city under Israeli control.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will not kneel and we will not surrender,\u201d Abbas said, adding that the Palestinians would resist the plan through \u201cpeaceful, popular means.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Islamic militant group Hamas rejected the \u201cconspiracies\u201d announced by the U.S. and Israel and said \u201call options are open\u201d in responding to the Trump administration\u2019s plan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are certain that our Palestinian people will not let these conspiracies pass. So, all options are open. The (Israeli) occupation and the U.S. administration will bear the responsibility for what they did,\u201d senior Hamas official Khalil al-Hayya said as he participated in one of several protests that broke out across the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n<p>Protesters burned tires and pictures of President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.<\/p>\n<p>Abbas held an emergency meeting with other Palestinian factions, including Hamas, to discuss a unified response to the plan. Abbas had rejected the deal before it was announced saying the U.S. was hopelessly biased toward Israel.<\/p>\n<p>The Palestinians cut off all contacts with the Trump administration after it recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel more than two years ago and moved the embassy there.<\/p>\n<p>Late on Tuesday, Palestinian protesters clashed with Israeli forces on the outskirts of Ramallah, near the Jewish settlement of Beit El.<\/p>\n<p>EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said Trump\u2019s initiative \u201cprovides an occasion to re-launch the urgently needed efforts towards a negotiated and viable solution\u201d to the conflict.<\/p>\n<p>He said the EU would \u201cstudy and assess the proposals put forward.\u201d He reiterated the bloc\u2019s commitment to a \u201cnegotiated and viable two-state solution that takes into account the legitimate aspirations of both the Palestinians and the Israelis, respecting all relevant U.N. resolutions and internationally agreed parameters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the United Nations supports two states living in peace and security within recognized borders, on the basis of the pre-1967 borders, according to his spokesman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe position of the United Nations on the two-state solution has been defined, throughout the years, by relevant Security Council and General Assembly resolutions by which the Secretariat is bound,\u201d the spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, said.<\/p>\n<p>Those resolutions call all Israeli settlements in the West Bank illegal and call for a solution based on borders before the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, with agreed land swaps.<\/p>\n<p>Saudi Arabia said it appreciated the Trump administration\u2019s efforts and encouraged the resumption of direct talks between Israel and the Palestinians \u201cunder the auspices of the United States.\u201d The kingdom\u2019s Foreign Ministry tweeted that it hoped to see the peace process move forward in order to reach \u201can agreement that achieves the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jordan, meanwhile, warned against any Israeli \u201cannexation of Palestinian lands\u201d and reaffirmed its commitment to the creation of a Palestinian state along the 1967 lines, which would include all the West Bank and Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi warned of \u201cthe dangerous consequences of unilateral Israeli measures, such as annexation of Palestinian lands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Egypt urged Israelis and Palestinians to \u201ccarefully study\u201d the plan and said it appreciates the administration\u2019s efforts.<\/p>\n<p>The Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement Tuesday that it favors a solution that restores all the \u201clegitimate rights\u201d of the Palestinian people through establishing an \u201cindependent and sovereign state on the occupied Palestinian territories.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jordan and Egypt are the only two Arab countries to have made peace with Israel.<\/p>\n<p>___<\/p>\n<p>Associated Press writer Mohammed Daraghmeh reported this story in Ramallah and AP writer Fares Akram reported from Gaza City, Gaza Strip.
