The International Conference on the Crimes of Colonialism in Africa, held in Algiers on Sunday and Monday, resulted in a series of recommendations issued in the \u201cAlgiers Declaration,\u201d which aims to restore justice while fulfilling a duty to remember the victims of colonialism.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>At first glance, the <strong>Algiers Declaration<\/strong> calls the former colonial powers to \u201cfully assume their historical responsibilities through the public and explicit recognition of the injustices committed\u201d, recommending, \u201cthe creation of Pan-African digital archives, the revision of educational curricula, and the creation of memorials, museums, and commemorative days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The participants in the conference recommended the <strong>establishment of national truth and reparations Commissions<\/strong> within the member states of the African Union, in addition to supporting \u201cthe establishment and strengthening of legal mechanisms at the national, regional, continental, and international levels aimed at institutionalizing criminalization of colonialism in international law through the documentation, access, and full restitution of archives, and to guarantee both legal accountability for colonial crimes and their lasting consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Algiers Declaration also urges AU Member States, Regional Economic Communities (RECs), The Regional Coordination Mechanism (RMs), and academic institutions to develop model laws, draft conventions, and jurisprudential analyses that advance the recognition, criminalization, and prosecution of colonial crimes.<\/p>\n<p>It supports, in this regard, \u201cthe creation of a <strong>Pan-African Committee on Memory and Historical Truth<\/strong>, which will be mandated to harmonize historical approaches, oversee the collection of archives, coordinate African research centers, and produce analyses and recommendations for the continent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe call for the expansion of continental and national commemorative initiatives, including museums, monuments, memorial sites, commemorative days, and educational reforms,\u201d the participants said.<\/p>\n<p>They affirmed \u201cthe need to establish a continental assessment of the ecological and climatic impact of colonialism and the rehabilitation needs of territories affected by nuclear, chemical, and industrial testing.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"mePt3FukAX\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/pakistanintheworld.pk\/live\/algiers-declaration-the-international-conference-on-the-crimes-of-colonialism-in-africa-draft\/\">ALGIERS DECLARATION @ The International Conference on the Crimes of Colonialism in Africa @ DRAFT<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;ALGIERS DECLARATION @ The International Conference on the Crimes of Colonialism in Africa @ DRAFT&#8221; &#8212; Pakistan In the World\" src=\"https:\/\/pakistanintheworld.pk\/live\/algiers-declaration-the-international-conference-on-the-crimes-of-colonialism-in-africa-draft\/embed\/#?secret=Od8VOg77tb#?secret=mePt3FukAX\" data-secret=\"mePt3FukAX\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>They supported \u201cthe establishment of an <strong>African Platform for Environmental Justice,<\/strong> tasked with identifying affected areas, assessing the damage, supporting the States concerned, and formulating continental recommendations for rehabilitation and compensation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe urge the states historically responsible for the environmental damage that has caused climate change, particularly the former colonial powers, to assume their moral and political responsibility, calling on them to provide financial, technological, and institutional support for the continent\u2019s adaptation and mitigation efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On another level, the signatories of the Algiers Declaration emphasized <strong>\u201cthe urgent need to reform African education systems to fully integrate pre-colonial, colonial, and post-colonial history, and to equip younger generations with an informed historical consciousness.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe encourage African universities and academies to create training programs and degrees Higher National Diploma (HND), Bachelor\u2019s, and Master\u2019s degrees whose curricula are based on historical memory, truth, justice, and the right to reparations,\u201d they said, calling for \u201cthe creation and implementation of a continental platform for African researchers and students in the history of colonialism, providing access to books, documentary sources, and scholarships.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"gI8QlD9pGk\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/pakistanintheworld.pk\/live\/time-to-criminalize-colonialism-on-international-law-algeria-takes-the-lead-hosting-the-first-ever-international-conference-on-colonial-crimes-in-africa-under-president-tebbounes-patronag\/\">TIME TO CRIMINALIZE COLONIALISM ON INTERNATIONAL LAW : Algeria Takes the Lead !
