Even after the collapse of the southerners, the Emirates retained ways to ensure a \u201cshowing of the flag\u201d in this country.\u200b<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"header-anchor-post\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Old comrades fall out<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<div class=\"pencraft pc-display-flex pc-alignItems-center pc-position-absolute pc-reset header-anchor-parent\">\n<div class=\"pencraft pc-display-contents pc-reset pubTheme-yiXxQA\">The conflict between yesterday\u2019s allies in Yemen began in <strong>December 2025<\/strong>, when the\u00a0<strong>Southern Transitional Council (STC)<\/strong>, supported by the\u00a0<strong>UAE<\/strong>, under the pretext of conducting a counterterrorism operation, turned its weapons against its former partners \u2014 the northerners loyal to\u00a0<strong>Saudi Arabia<\/strong>.\u200b<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"pencraft pc-display-contents pc-reset pubTheme-yiXxQA\">This happened with <strong>Abu Dhabi\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0formal consent: the sheikhs were no longer satisfied with the balance of forces inside Yemen, which had clearly not developed in favor of the southerners, and they took advantage of the opportunity to redistribute local property.\u200b<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Abu Dhabi\u2019s calculation was ambitious, yet at the same time simple: the pro-Saudi elements, exhausted by a years-long war with the\u00a0<strong>Houthis<\/strong>\u00a0backed by\u00a0<strong>Iran<\/strong>, did not represent a serious threat on the battlefield and certainly\u00a0<strong>did not expect a stab in the back<\/strong>\u00a0from their allies.\u200b<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, over the years, Saudi Arabia\u2019s support for them had almost completely shifted into the diplomatic arena.\u200b<\/p>\n<p>The UAE believed that in the event of an escalation, Riyadh would not want to return troops to Yemen, from where it had only recently withdrawn them with great difficulty and reputational losses, and therefore would agree to a deal on Abu Dhabi\u2019s terms.\u200b<\/p>\n<p>At first, the scheme really did work. The southerners quickly managed to break the resistance of the northerners and virtually reached the \u201chistorical borders\u201d of\u00a0<strong>South Yemen<\/strong>, whose formal revival (under the name \u201c<strong>State of South Arabia<\/strong>\u201d) they had proclaimed back in\u00a0<strong>2016<\/strong>.\u200b<\/p>\n<p>The southerners rushed toward the country\u2019s rich oil-bearing areas and the Yemeni\u2013Saudi border in order to finally cut the local loyalists off from their sponsors.\u200b<\/p>\n<p>However, as subsequent events showed, the Arabian neighbors were unable to predict Riyadh\u2019s behavior.\u200b<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"i7SVFszYbd\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/pakistanintheworld.pk\/live\/pakistans-largest-military-deal-with-haftar-despite-un-embargo-with-no-clarification-as-weapons-will-not-be-used-against-tripoli-jf-17-thunder-dones-super-mushak-included\/\">Pakistan&#8217;s Largest Military Deal with Haftar Despite UN Embargo ! JF-17 Thunder , Dones, Super Mushak  Included&#8221; &#8212; Pakistan In the World\" src=\"https:\/\/pakistanintheworld.pk\/live\/pakistans-largest-military-deal-with-haftar-despite-un-embargo-with-no-clarification-as-weapons-will-not-be-used-against-tripoli-jf-17-thunder-dones-super-mushak-included\/embed\/#?secret=54r8OySllC#?secret=i7SVFszYbd\" data-secret=\"i7SVFszYbd\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h5 class=\"header-anchor-post\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Counterstrike<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>The Saudi operation began on\u00a0<strong>30 December 2025<\/strong>, its formal pretext being the increasingly frequent transfer of weapons from the UAE to\u00a0<strong>South Yemen<\/strong>.\u200b<\/p>\n<p>Arabian armored units, which had spent more than a week at the border as a deterrent signal, entered Yemeni territory, sending the STC soldiers entrenched there into flight.\u200b<\/p>\n<p>And after Saudi aviation, on the night of\u00a0<strong>1 January<\/strong>, struck\u00a0the port of\u00a0<strong>Mukalla<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 the key supply artery of the southerners \u2014 destroying the equipment and ammunition depots accumulated there, it became clear that no one intended to show them any leniency. Nor would the matter be limited to merely pushing southern units back from the Saudi border.\u200b<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, Riyadh issued a public\u00a0<strong>ultimatum<\/strong>\u00a0to Abu Dhabi: Emirati military advisers had to leave Yemen promptly and cease supporting the southerners. Otherwise, they would become legitimate targets for the Saudi army.\u200b<\/p>\n<p>By that point, the UAE had already realized it had made a\u00a0<strong>fatal miscalculation<\/strong>\u00a0in preparing the operation and therefore agreed to the proposed terms: by\u00a0<strong>3 January 2026<\/strong>, its military presence in mainland Yemen had effectively come to an end. And the STC forces were left practically one-on-one with the Saudi war machine.\u200b<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"header-anchor-post\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Attempts to negotiate<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<div class=\"pencraft pc-display-flex pc-alignItems-center pc-position-absolute pc-reset header-anchor-parent\">\n<div class=\"pencraft pc-display-contents pc-reset pubTheme-yiXxQA\">\n<p>After the Emirates demonstratively washed their hands of the affair, panic gripped the southerners: <strong>the front collapsed<\/strong>, and the temporary administrations created in the recaptured provinces fell apart. Some of the collaborators quickly surrendered to the mercy of the victors.\u200b<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In less than a week, more than\u00a0<strong>90%<\/strong>\u00a0of the territories seized by the southerners came under the control of Saudi Arabia and the local forces that had joined them (including nominally independent tribal militias).\u200b<\/p>\n<p>By the end of\u00a0<strong>7 January<\/strong>, only a small patch of land in the southwest of the country remained under their control \u2014 without access to the sea, squeezed from different sides by pro-Saudi and pro-Iranian forces.\u200b<\/p>\n<p>Against this backdrop, \u201cenvoys of peace\u201d from among the high-ranking representatives of the STC rushed to Riyadh. The southerners hoped, if not to completely smooth over the conflict, then\u00a0<strong>at least to agree on a territorial swap and freeze the status quo<\/strong>\u00a0along the new lines.\u200b<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-57711\" src=\"https:\/\/pakistanintheworld.pk\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Aidrus-al-Zubaidi-Yemen.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pakistanintheworld.pk\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Aidrus-al-Zubaidi-Yemen.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pakistanintheworld.pk\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Aidrus-al-Zubaidi-Yemen-80x60.jpg 80w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>However, the Saudi courtiers did not receive their delegation, hinting that they would speak only with the initiator of the coup, the chairman of the STC,\u00a0<strong>Aidarus al\u2011Zoubaidi<\/strong>.\u200b<\/p>\n<p>Yet the southerners failed to reach him: at the most critical moment, the leader of\u00a0<strong>the \u201cState of South Arabia\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0disappeared from the radar and, according to available information, fled to the UAE. After that, he was promptly declared a\u00a0<strong>traitor<\/strong>\u00a0and struck from the political rolls.\u200b<\/p>\n<p>Still, it is too early to consider this the end of his political career. It is possible that al\u2011Zoubaidi\u00a0<strong>will soon reappear\u00a0<\/strong>on the Yemeni political scene, but in a new status and with a new circle of supporters.\u200b<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"header-anchor-post\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Valuable assets<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<div class=\"pencraft pc-display-flex pc-alignItems-center pc-position-absolute pc-reset header-anchor-parent\">\n<div class=\"pencraft pc-display-contents pc-reset pubTheme-yiXxQA\">\n<p>Despite the effective defeat of the pro-Emirati forces in Yemen, Abu Dhabi still has the ability to dictate its will in the <strong>Red Sea<\/strong>\u00a0region.\u200b<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>All the more so because the Saudi military operation is taking place exclusively on land, while the valuable islands (<strong>Abd al\u2011Kuri, Perim, the islands of the Socotra archipelago<\/strong>), where reconnaissance and support infrastructure has been created, including sites for UAV launches, lie outside the combat zone.\u200b<\/p>\n<p>Control over the local facilities, despite the formal withdrawal of UAE armed forces from Yemen, remains with Abu Dhabi and its \u201cpocket\u201d militias, such as the \u201c<strong>Falcons of Socotra<\/strong>\u201d, which cooperated with the STC but did not side with them during the failed offensive.\u200b<\/p>\n<p>As a result, even after the rout of the southerners, the Emirates retained the ability to control the situation in the\u00a0<strong>Bab el\u2011Mandeb Strait<\/strong>.\u200b<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the UAE is increasing its presence in the autonomous\u00a0region of\u00a0<strong>Puntland (Somalia)<\/strong>. The \u201ccore\u201d facility there is the\u00a0<strong>Bosaso<\/strong>\u00a0air base, which was used as a transshipment point for supplying separatists in\u00a0<strong>Sudan<\/strong>\u00a0and, after the withdrawal of Emirati troops from Yemen, also became a gathering point for loyalists who had fled the country.\u200b<\/p>\n<p>As for the future of the STC, the Emirates will most likely prefer to shut down this project as soon as possible.
