CYPRUS – A drone strike on the British Royal Air Force base at Akrotiri in Cyprus has sparked fresh debate over the rapidly escalating tensions surrounding the U.S.\u2013Israel confrontation with Iran.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Cypriot government and the British Defence Ministry said\u00a0a surprise Iranian-made drone attack\u00a0targeted the Royal Air Force base \u2060of Akrotiri, southwest of Cyprus\u2019s coastal city of Limassol.<\/p>\n

The country\u2019s president, Nikos Christodoulides, said a Shahed-type unmanned aerial \u200cvehicle caused minor damage when it crashed into the military facilities early on Monday.<\/p>\n

The United Kingdom\u2019s Royal Air Force base \u2060of Akrotiri in Cyprus has witnessed a suspected Iranian drone attack overnight, the island\u2019s president and the British Ministry of Defence said, after Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the UK would allow the United States to use its bases to attack Iran.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Akrotiri, located on a square-shaped peninsula on the southern tip of Cyprus, has been used in \u200cthe past for military operations in Iraq, Syria and Yemen.<\/p>\n

Reporting from outside the base, Al Jazeera\u2019s John Psaropoulos said about 1,000 residents were evacuated from their homes as authorities worked to put emergency procedures in place.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The incident, which caused only minor damage and no casualties, was initially linked by some reports to Iran, but later assessments suggested the drone was likely launched by suspected Hezbollah from Lebanon rather than directly from Iranian territory.<\/div>\n

The timing of the attack has drawn particular attention. The United Kingdom had earlier shown reluctance to become directly involved in the U.S.\u2013Israeli military campaign against Iran. London initially denied requests to allow its bases to be used for offensive operations, emphasizing caution and the need to avoid being dragged into a wider regional war.<\/div>\n

However, the sudden drone strike on a British base , quickly framed within the broader Iran conflict, raised questions among analysts about whether the episode might have been used to increase political pressure on the UK to shift its stance.<\/p>\n

The United Kingdom is deploying a warship and helicopters to Cyprus, the British government has said, as global concern continues to mount over the fallout from deadly US-Israel attacks on Iran and retaliatory Iranian strikes across the region.<\/p>\n

One of the Royal Navy\u2019s six Type-45 air defence destroyers, the HMS Dragon is fitted with a Sea Viper missile system able to launch eight missiles in under 10 seconds and guide up to 16 missiles simultaneously, the ministry said in a statement.<\/p>\n

In a social media post announcing the deployment, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the country was \u201cfully committed to the security of Cyprus and British military personnel based there\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Later on Tuesday, French President Emmanuel Macron ordered France\u2019s nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, the Charles de Gaulle, to move from the Baltic Sea to the Mediterranean. He said the Charles de Gaulle will be escorted by its air wing and its escorting frigates.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In a prerecorded speech on French TV, Macron added that Rafale fighter jets, air defence systems, and airborne radar systems have been deployed over the past few hours in the Middle East.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd we will continue this effort as much as necessary,\u201d Macron said. He cited Monday\u2019s strike on a British air force base on Cyprus, adding that Cyprus and France have recently signed a strategic partnership agreement.<\/p>\n

A NATO system shot down an Iranian ballistic missile headed toward Turkish airspace, Ankara\u2019s Defense Ministry confirmed. The missile crossed Iraq and Syria before interception. Debris fell in Hatay\u2014no damage.<\/strong><\/div>\n

Turkey told Iran directly: your missile nearly entered our airspace. An Iranian ballistic missile heading toward Turkish territory, a NATO member, intercepted and neutralized. Turkey is not in this war. They share a border with Iran. And Iranian missiles are now straying into their airspace. Fidan\u2019s message was polite. \u201cDon\u2019t make NATO invoke Article 5 over a stray missile.\u201d<\/div>\n

But the development in Cyprus indicate that major NATO members have been engaged in the war though the drone was not fired from Iran. It gives rise to speculations that the drone attack on British Base in Cyprus was actually to force these two military powers of Europe to join US in war on Iran. Both were taking a different stance otherwise before the suspected drone attack.<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
