Sri Lanka is \u200ctrying to \u201csafeguard lives\u201d on another Iranian ship off its coast, \u2060its cabinet spokesperson says, after an attack by the United States on an Iranian frigate killed more than 87 sailors and left dozens missing. There are fears the second vessel could be targeted in the same way.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Earlier on Tuesday, 03 March, Frigate Dena, a guest of India’s Navy carrying almost 180 sailors, was struck in international waters without warning. An American submarine sank an Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean by a torpedo.<\/p>\n

His announcement came after Sri Lanka said its navy had responded to a distress call on Wednesday morning from an Iranian ship, the Iris Dena, which had gone down about 40km (25 miles) from its southern coastline.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWe are doing \u2060our utmost to safeguard lives,\u201d Nalinda \u2060Jayatissa said on Thursday, adding that the second vessel was in the economic zone \u200cbeyond \u2060the Sri Lanka\u2019s territorial waters.<\/p>\n

Jayatissa said the second warship is reported to be carrying more than 100 crew members and is heading to the same area where the US submarine destroyed the Iranian frigate.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe second Iranian warship to pass near Sri Lanka\u2019s territorial waters since yesterday is believed to be part of a group of three Iranian navy vessels returning from an international maritime event in India,\u201d Al Jazeera\u2019s Minelle Fernandez said, reporting from Colombo, Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe second ship contacted local authorities in Sri Lanka, indicating it is running into engine trouble and asking to call into port. That is not happening, but there is some communication, from what we\u2019re hearing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sri Lanka\u2019s government, meanwhile, \u201chas to walk on eggshells\u201d, Fernandez said.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven though it has not taken either side in the ongoing war and is far from the centre of operations, the country has almost been drawn into this conflict.\u201d<\/p>\n

Authorities in the southern port city of Galle, meanwhile, were making preparations on Thursday to hand over the remains of the 87 Iranian sailors killed in the torpedo attack claimed by the US military.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Officials at the main hospital in Galle said 32<\/strong> rescued<\/strong> Iranians<\/strong> were being treated under tight security provided by police and elite commandos.<\/p>\n

The Emergency Treatment Unit was off limits to visitors and other patients as medical authorities set up a separate ward for the Iranians.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost of them have minor injuries, but there were a few with fractures and burns,\u201d a nurse at the hospital told the AFP news agency without giving her name.<\/p>\n

Navy spokesman Buddhika Sampath told AFP that Sri Lankan navy vessels were continuing their search for missing Iranian sailors.<\/p>\n

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Thursday that the US \u201cwill come to bitterly regret [the] precedent it has set\u201d. It was the first time the Iranian government acknowledged the sinking of the IRIS Dena in the Indian Ocean.<\/p>\n

Araghchi made the comment on X, saying, \u201cThe US has perpetrated an atrocity at sea, 2,000 miles [3,200km] away from Iran\u2019s shores.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFrigate Dena, a guest of India\u2019s Navy carrying almost 130 sailors, was struck in international waters without warning,\u201d he wrote. \u201cMark my words: The US will come to bitterly regret [the] precedent it has set.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

General Kioumars Heydari, a commander of Iran\u2019s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), told state TV on Thursday that the IRGC has \u201cdecided to fight Americans wherever they are\u201d, adding that Iran does not care about how long the war lasts.<\/p>\n

Later on Thursday, the IRGC said it had hit a US tanker \u200cin the northern part of the Gulf and the vessel was on fire. The IRGC said in the statement carried by state media that in a time of war, passage through the Strait of Hormuz would be under the control of Iran.<\/p>\n
