\"\"ISLAMABAD: 14 April 2026 – China\u2019s President Xi Jinping met Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez in Beijing on Tuesday, with the visit centered on strengthening economic ties.The meeting of the two leaders comes on the second day of Sanchez\u2019s visit as he seeks to position Spain as a bridge between Beijing and the European Union, whose relations with the United States are under strain.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The Spanish prime minister is on his fourth visit to China in four years and follows a steady flow of Western leaders visiting Beijing in recent months as President Donald Trump\u2019s tariffs and unpredictable foreign policy have rattled the US\u2019s traditional allies.<\/p>\n

The sides pledged on Tuesday to deepen ties and safeguard global peace \u200band development amid an international order that President Xi \u200cJinping called “crumbling” in remarks during a meeting with Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez in Beijing.<\/div>\n

In “today’s world, chaos abounds, and the international order is crumbling,” Xi \u200bsaid, adding that deeper ties were in the interests of both \u200bChina and Spain.<\/div>\n

He urged stronger communication and trust to “uphold the rule of law, jointly defend genuine multilateralism, and safeguard global peace and development”.<\/div>\n

Sanchez said international law was \u200brepeatedly being undermined, and called for closer ties to promote \u200bpeace and prosperity. “It is more necessary today than ever, and so that together we \u200ccan \u2060establish an even stronger bond between China and the European Union,” Sanchez said.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The visit by Sanchez comes as many Western governments are seeking to maintain ties with \u200bBeijing despite lingering security and trade tension, as discomfort grows \u200bover the policies of key ally, U.S. President Donald \u2060Trump, especially in trade and security matters.\u00a0It follows visits to China earlier this year \u2060by the prime ministers of Britain, Ireland, Canada and Finland.<\/div>\n
