Earlier the Editor of this media Mr. Tazeen Akhtar shared in his comments that Mandeb is more important than Hormuz because it connects Mediterranean with Arabaian Sea through Suiz Canal into Red Sea.<\/span><\/div>\n

The government in\u00a0Mogadishu<\/span><\/span>\u00a0has announced a decision to ban Israeli vessels from transiting the\u00a0Bab el-Mandeb Strait<\/span><\/span>, in what is seen as a direct response to\u00a0Israel<\/span><\/span>\u2019s recognition of\u00a0Somaliland<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and the appointment of an ambassador to the breakaway region.<\/p>\n

Abdullah Warfa<\/span><\/span>\u00a0stated that the move aims to safeguard\u00a0Somalia<\/span><\/span>\u2019s sovereignty and territorial integrity, warning that any foreign interference would face serious consequences, including restrictions on access to key maritime routes.<\/p>\n

The escalation follows Israel\u2019s implementation of its agreement with Somaliland to exchange ambassadors, after becoming the first country to formally recognize the region last year.<\/p>\n

However, analysts question Somalia\u2019s ability to enforce such a ban, citing its limited naval and air capabilities and lack of military assets to carry out the threat. Still, they note that the move carries significant diplomatic and political implications.<\/p>\n

In this context,\u00a0Rashid Abdi<\/span><\/span>\u00a0warned that such rhetoric could complicate Somalia\u2019s relations with the\u00a0United States<\/span><\/span>, particularly if interpreted as alignment with the\u00a0Houthis<\/span><\/span>\u00a0amid Red Sea tensions.<\/p>\n

Somaliland is not internationally recognized as a sovereign state, despite declaring independence from Somalia in 1991. Under international law, it remains part of Somalia and does not hold a seat at the\u00a0United Nations<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Somaliland President\u00a0Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro<\/span><\/span>\u00a0renewed calls for recognition, stating that the only viable path forward is the establishment of two neighboring states with peaceful relations.<\/p>\n

In his annual address to parliament, Irro emphasized that Somaliland will continue its diplomatic campaign for full recognition, describing it as a firm commitment that could be realized in the near future.<\/p>\n

It is worth noting that Somaliland has sought international recognition for over three decades without success, until Israel\u2019s recognition in December 2025\u2014a move that triggered widespread regional and international opposition.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
