She presented the 26 billion PKR Covid19 package that the EU has put together in support to Pakistan. Ambassador Kaminara and the Prime Minister also discussed how Pakistan and the EU can further benefit from a stronger political partnership in light of the political, economic and security developments.<\/p>\n<p>Ambassador Androulla Kaminara said: \u201cA longstanding friend and partner of Pakistan, the European Union stands side by side with Pakistan as the country faces the extraordinary challenge of the <strong>COVID-19 pandemic<\/strong>. The EU is convinced that the global pandemic requires global solidarity and cooperation. I very much appreciate the constructive discussion with Prime Minister Imran Khan and I am looking forward to continued collaboration during and beyond the current crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Prime Minister briefed the Ambassador on the government\u2019s vision and action to fight Covid19. Ambassador Kaminara lauded the governments\u2019 efforts, including the scale-up of the Ehsaas programme for the most vulnerable and poor. She pointed out the opportunities of the partnership with the EU as major trade partner and key donor in Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The European Union<\/strong> is directing more than \u20ac150 million (26 billion PKR; 163 MUSD) towards the short and medium term response in the emerging health crisis in Pakistan and into strengthening the preparedness of Pakistan\u2019s people for its social and economic impact, with a specific focus on the most vulnerable.<\/p>\n<p>The package and the EU\u2019s overall long-standing support to Pakistan are to be seen in addition to EU Member States\u2019 generous co-funding of the lending and operational capacity of multilateral institutions currently assisting Pakistan and numerous other countries around the world in addressing the crisis.[1]<\/p>\n<p>Milko van Gool, Head of Cooperation at the Delegation of the European Union to Pakistan explained: <em>\u201cThe EU and its 27 Member States, as #TeamEurope, are collaborating on a comprehensive response to help Pakistan address the challenges related to Covid19. We are working closely with the Pakistani government and our partners to make sure our assistance intervenes where it is most needed and where it can make the biggest difference to help the Pakistani people in this crisis.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The package covers a wide range of measures for the short and medium term:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Humanitarian support of <\/strong>\u20ac<strong> 48.9 million:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 Projects worth approximately \u20ac 11 million have been launched to provide emergency health support for the most vulnerable population across Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 Another \u20ac 27.9 million will be released soon to scale-up this assistance.<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 A further \u20ac 10 million will help mitigate the impact of the Covid-19 crisis on Afghanrefugees and their host communities in Pakistan.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Existing and upcoming development programmes<\/strong> in several sectors and across Pakistan will be partially adjusted to tackle challenges arising from Covid-19. Activities worth approxmately <strong>\u20ac 56 million<\/strong> will focus on:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 mass awareness raising among the population to reduce infection risk;<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 strengthening diagnostic capacities;<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 purchasing of protective gear and sanitary materials for the rural poor, for medical officers as well as for law enforcement staff;<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 maintaining a helpline to ensure women\u2019s safety during the crisis;<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 helping people to generate income in order to avoid or address poverty due to the crisis;<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 supporting vulnerable Small and Medium Enterprises (SME);<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 ensuring education for children; and<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 supporting Covid-19- related policymaking.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Payments worth over \u20ac 31 million<\/strong> <strong>to directly support the government budget are accelerated<\/strong> to provide the provincial governments of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh with the means to fund Covid-19 crisis responses.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Civil society organisations <\/strong>across Pakistan are invited through a <strong>\u20ac 6.65 million<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/webgate.ec.europa.eu\/europeaid\/online-services\/index.cfm?ADSSChck=1588164516414&amp;do=publi.detPUB&amp;searchtype=AS&amp;Pgm=7573847&amp;zgeo=35389&amp;ccnt=7573876&amp;debpub=&amp;orderby=upd&amp;orderbyad=Desc&amp;nbPubliList=15&amp;page=1&amp;aoref=168654\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/webgate.ec.europa.eu\/europeaid\/online-services\/index.cfm?ADSSChck%3D1588164516414%26do%3Dpubli.detPUB%26searchtype%3DAS%26Pgm%3D7573847%26zgeo%3D35389%26ccnt%3D7573876%26debpub%3D%26orderby%3Dupd%26orderbyad%3DDesc%26nbPubliList%3D15%26page%3D1%26aoref%3D168654&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1588959556150000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEchf7m8vEiRlA15hquBVPFusCO7g\">call for proposals<\/a> to address the social and economic impact of the crisis, while particularly involving young people.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Islamabad; 07 May 2020 &#8211; Ambassador of the European Union Delegation to Pakistan, Ms. Androulla Kaminara, called on Prime Minister Imran Khan today.
