Iran has submitted its latest text in 14 points through the Pakistani intermediary, who will present it to the Americans. The source said on Monday that the Americans had recently sent a text in response to Iran\u2019s previous proposal, which was also presented in 14 points.<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s new text is focused on the subject of \u201cnegotiations to end the war and confidence-building measures by the American side\u201d.<\/p>\n

Iran sent a new peace proposal to the United States with terms that appeared similar \u200cto offers Washington has previously rejected, although a senior Iranian official told Reuters on Monday that the U.S. had softened positions on some issues.<\/p>\n

It would focus first on securing an end \u200bto the war, reopening the Strait of Hormuz – a major oil supply route that Iran has effectively blockaded – and lifting maritime sanctions. More contentious issues around Iran’s nuclear programme and uranium enrichment would be deferred to later rounds of talks, the source said.<\/p>\n

A Pakistani source confirmed that Islamabad, which has conveyed messages but\u00a0 suggested progress had been difficult. The sides “keep changing their goalposts,” the Pakistani source \u200bsaid, adding: “We don’t have much time.”<\/p>\n

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei confirmed that Tehran’s views had been “conveyed to the \u2060American side through Pakistan” but gave no details. Washington did not immediately comment.<\/p>\n

However, in an apparent softening of Washington’s stance, the senior Iranian \u200bsource said the United States had agreed to release a quarter of Iran’s frozen funds – totaling tens of billions of dollars – held in \u200bforeign banks. Iran wants all the assets released.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

The Iranian source also said Washington had showed more flexibility in allowing Iran to continue some peaceful nuclear activity \u200cunder supervision \u2060of the International Atomic Energy Agency.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Iran’s Tasnim news agency separately quoted an unidentified source as saying the U.S. had accepted waiving oil sanctions on Iran while negotiations were under way. Iranian officials did not immediately comment on Tasnim’s report.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n
