What started off as a disease spread by bats in Wuhan, China has now become arguably one of the greatest threats to thisworld. The disease was first identified in December 2019 in Wuhan, the capital of China’s Hubei province and has resulted in the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

As of 5 May, 2020 there have been more than 3.62 million reported cases across the world with more than 253,000 deaths and around 1.18 million recoveries. While in Pakistan, more than 22,049 confirmed cases have been reported in which 5,801 have been recovered and 514 have been deceased. As every country is struggling to fight against the coronavirus, the health officials in Pakistan are confident in controlling the spread of coronavirus. Pakistan’s top health official has stated that the intensity of the spread of COVID-19 pandemic is not as severe in Pakistan as it is in other countries. But the numbers speak otherwise, the official data has shown that the confirmed cases are increasing day by day.

In this global outbreak, the people should act smart and responsible instead of putting everything on the Government. A lot of countries have opted for a lockdown and precautions have been recommended. The most common precautions include social distancing, avoiding handshakes, refraining from going in public places and using an alcohol based hand sanitizer or soap. But unfortunately, not every person is acting upon the advice of the Government and the doctors. We have to ask ourselves, “Are we really taking this pandemic seriously?” Because even now I see people who don’t care about the deadliness of coronavirus or maybe they just don’t know anything about it. Either way, the people as citizens should be more responsible in this situation because not everything is the Government’s fault.

What’s perhaps even more disturbing is the fact that there is still no “official” vaccine for the coronavirus as antibiotics don’t work on this virus as it is a virus, not a bacteria. The present treatment for viruses also do not seem to work on the coronavirus because it is a new virus and there’s less information about this virus as of now. It all depends on our efforts and responsibilities. But despite that, there have been recoveries from this disease which might be a silver lining. But that does not justify people still going out and gathering in certain areas as the disease is still pretty deadly.

This pandemic has affected the daily wager in Pakistan so badly that we cannot even imagine. Which is why Prime Minister Imran Khan announced the Ehsaas Emergency Cash Program, which is providing relief on the basis of merit, transparency and impartiality. The Prime Minister directed the MNAs and MPAs throughout the country to play a vibrant role in providing relief to the people in their individual constituencies especially during the holy month of Ramazan. It is said that the Ehsaas program is playing its role in helping the needy.

As the Government is doing what’s necessary, I think it would not be appropriate if the doctors are not appreciated in this time of crisis. This pandemic, along with the ones happened before is a clear example of how the doctors are one of the true heroes of a nation. They have played a vital role for the betterment of the public and this, in my opinion is the perfect time to appreciate them for their service.

Apart from what we see on the news, there have been a lot of theories regarding the coronavirus which still seem terrifying, even if they are not true. One that is the most popular among the conspiracy theorists is that this is not a pandemic that just happened by chance. According to them, this virus was actually spread on purpose and the objective behind it was depopulation. We have all heard stories of the secret societies. The world’s most elite, who are said to control this world. Is this pandemic actually a part of a plan? A step towards the New World Order? Well, there is still no hard evidence supporting these theories but one can only guess.

Is China actually to blame for the spread of the coronavirus? According to reports, in December 2019, Dr. Li Wenliang, an ophthalmologist from China found 7 patients infected with a deadly new virus. No one had any information regarding this virus but Dr. Li had understood the deadliness of this virus and started to warn the people. In 30 December, 2019, he told about this virus to his fellow doctors via social media but after a few days, Dr. Li was arrested for “spreading news about a fake disease” and the police made him sign a document which stated that he was not allowed to share any false statement about this disease. After a few days, the coronavirus spread throughout Wuhan and people realized that the Government and the police had declared Dr. Li’s statement as a rumor instead of taking action at that time. The fish market in Wuhan was eventually declared the source of this virus and was sealed later.

But the story does not end here as Dr. Li, who warned the people about the coronavirus was infected with coronavirus on 12 January, 2020. A phone call between Dr. Li and a reporter from CNN showed that he was in quite a critical condition which resulted in his death on 7 February, 2020. Dr. Li’s demise resulted in the people blaming the Government for the spread of this virus via social media and demanded freedom of speech from the Government. But the Chinese Government eventually had all the posts on social media deleted. Furthermore, many videos have been posted online where the people infected with coronavirus are seen coughing and sneezing on objects present in grocery stores or on anything they can find. This again, leads to my question mentioned above that is this pandemic really a part of some huge plan that we still don’t know about? Why do they want people to die? Well the question remains unanswered to this day.

It’s safe to say that the COVID-19 pandemic has taken a toll on the economy of underdeveloped countries, as most of these countries like Pakistan, India and Bangladesh are not economically strong so they will have to face far greater damages. The International Monetary Fund expects the global GDP to fall by 3% in 2020. Pakistan will inevitably be impacted by both the global and domestic developments arising from the spread of coronavirus. Pakistan’s economy was reported to be recovering slowly but now the spread of coronavirus is most likely to become a major obstacle in the way. The World Bank has projected that Pakistan’s economy will experience a negative GDP growth of 1.3% in 2019-20 followed by only 1% growth in 2020-21. This implies that the GDP growth in the fourth quarter of 2019-20 will be a big 10%.

Another major problem in countries like Pakistan is the lack of medical facilities. It’s no secret that Pakistan’s healthcare facilities are quite weak and we do not have enough to support our entire population. Our doctors and nurses are clearly doing everything that is in their power to control this virus but evidently, there are not sufficient basic protective kits. Consequently the medical staff are vulnerable to the coronavirus. One can only pray that the coronavirus does not cause more damage than it already has. Countries like Pakistan cannot afford the coronavirus seeping in anymore.

Another problem is lack of awareness as mentioned before. It is evident that people are not taking this pandemic seriously and don’t understand how their actions can affect the ones around them. Infected people are still going out to family gatherings, public parks, weddings, shopping malls and several other places. With such limited resources there is only much that the Government can perform, so people have to protect themselves and the ones around them by staying indoors and disinfecting their houses.

The world is facing yet another global pandemic called the coronavirus or COVID-19.
