Two consecutive incidents of such nature have spread panic among the higher education circles of the country , especially the foriegn students are exptremely concerned about their future.<\/p>\n<p>Turkiye has revoked the operational licence \u2060for \u2060a top private university with liberal values, effectively forcing it to close in the middle of the academic year, after the institution was seized \u2060by the state in a criminal investigation last year.<\/p>\n<p>In a presidential decree, published in the Official Gazette on Friday, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan revoked the operating licence for Istanbul Bilgi University, which has an estimated 20,000 students from Turkiye and across the world.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the school was seized by the state in a criminal investigation after its parent company, Can Holdings, was caught up in a money laundering and tax fraud sweep. Since then, Bilgi University has been run by a court-appointed administrator.<\/p>\n<p>Bilgi University takes part in the Erasmus Mundus programme. The institution was founded in 1996, and is known for its liberal values. The school\u2019s motto is \u201clearning not for school but for life\u201d. It currently ranks at 1,401 in the world according to QS World University ranking.<\/p>\n<p>Turkiye\u2019s Council of Higher Education promised to take \u201cthe necessary measures\u201d to ensure the students at the social sciences university, who were due to sit end-of-year exams in June, \u201csuffer no harm\u201d. But the matter of fact is harm has already been caused.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>How the students of a university may have respect and acceptance of their education who have been studying in a University that was shut down for criminal record? This is simple question that has not been answered properly by the Turkish Authorities. Secondly, it exposes the lacunas in the higher education licensing system of Turkiye. How a Company can get Education licence when it is involved in money laundering. Certainly the company did not start money laundering after the launch of the university.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Turkish local broadcaster TRT Haber reported that students will continue their education at Mimar Sinan University, the guarantor state university that does not look possible. It means one university will adjust the whole another university. It is impossible.<\/p>\n<p>The students and teachers are asking the question &#8221; Why we suffer for the wrong deeds , if any, of the parent company.&#8221; The government should shut down the company but why the university? Videos of dozens of students protesting at the university circulated online. Thanks to a strong visa success rate (often ranging between 75%-85%) and degrees taught in English, Turkey has emerged as a top-4 study destination for Pakistani youths<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Another strict action against the students of another university<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Turkish court has handed down suspended sentences to three Bo\u011fazi\u00e7i University students for spray-painting graffiti on public and private property after the detention of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem \u0130mamo\u011flu in March 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Istanbul 69th Criminal Court of First Instance gave each of the Bo\u011fazi\u00e7i University students a suspended sentence of three months, 10 days for damaging property used for public service, according to\u00a0the Bianet news website.<\/p>\n<p>The sentence to the students despite the concerned had no complaint is being seen as politically motivated because the Mayor is political opponent of the sitting President of the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The property cited in the case belonged to the Be\u015fikta\u015f Municipality and T\u00fcrk Telekom. Both told the court that no damage had occurred and said they did not want to pursue complaints against the students.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The case stemmed from protests after \u0130mamo\u011flu was detained on March 19, 2025, a day after Istanbul University annulled his diploma and days before the main opposition Republican People\u2019s Party (CHP) was set to formalize him as its presidential candidate. He was jailed pending trial on corruption charges four days later, allegations he and the CHP deny.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the indictment drafted by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor\u2019s Office, the students spray painted slogans on T\u00fcrk Telekom utility cabinets and on walls in Birlik Park in Istanbul\u2019s Be\u015fikta\u015f district at around 2 a.m. on March 26, 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The indictment said the slogans included calls for Istanbul to \u201cwake up,\u201d support for students and a boycott.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The students said in their defense that the paint was water-based, that they had no intention of causing permanent damage and that they later cleaned the graffiti themselves. One defendant said the paint could be removed easily and that they did not act with intent to damage public property. Another said the students cleaned the writing about a week after the incident.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lawyers for the students sought acquittal, arguing that the material elements of the offense had not been met because both the Be\u015fikta\u015f Municipality and T\u00fcrk Telekom reported no damage. The defense also cited Supreme Court of Appeals precedents, arguing that acts of \u201cpollution\u201d should not automatically be treated as property damage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The court ruled that the students had committed the offense of damaging public property.
