Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement signed between T\u00fcrkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan targets no country and remains open to participation of other friendly nations seeking peace, prosperity and stability in the region.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In a post on the Turkish social platform NSosyal, Erdogan said on Friday the agreement, based on the principle of collective deterrence, would strengthen security and defence cooperation, joint defence industry projects and counterterrorism efforts.<\/p>\n

He said the agreement also reaffirms the right to self-defence as defined under Article 51 of the UN Charter.<\/p>\n

“The agreement does not target any country and is open to the participation of all brotherly countries seeking peace, prosperity and stability in our region,” Erdogan said.<\/p>\n

T\u00fcrkiye, he added, would firmly maintain its principled stance in favour of resolving conflicts and crises through dialogue and diplomacy, based on respect for international law and in line with its vision of regional ownership.<\/p>\n

Turkish officials say the agreement as the tangible outcome of long-term diplomatic efforts carried out under the principle of regional ownership to establish a common framework for addressing growing regional and international security threats.The agreement also provides for expanded defence cooperation, including defence industry collaboration and military interoperability, among the three countries.<\/p>\n

Fidan shared the details of the pact in interview with TRT and Anadolu on Saturday.
\nIn an interview with state news broadcaster TRT Haber, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan discussed the Israeli-US war on Iran, emphasising the necessity for improved intelligence, security, and defence capabilities.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo country that does not attack us is in our sights,\u201d Fidan said , adding that the pact was technically similar to NATO\u2019s Article 5 collective defense clause.<\/p>\n

Hakan Fidan said that the defence agreement signed between T\u00fcrkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan in Mecca is technically equivalent to NATO’s Article 5 mutual defence clause but with a crucial distinction: it names no common enemy and targets no specific country.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

In interview with Anadolu, Fidan offered the most detailed explanation yet of the landmark trilateral pact, which he described as a necessary response to growing instability across the region.<\/p>\n

“The Mecca defence agreement is technically the same as NATO’s Article 5,” Fidan said, referring to the alliance’s collective defence provision that treats an attack on one member as an attack on all.<\/p>\n

“The pact does not specify any common threat,” Fidan said, adding that the three nations entered the agreement out of a shared recognition that the region’s deepening instability required a structured collective defence framework.<\/p>\n

No target, no aggression<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fidan was emphatic that the alliance was defensive in nature and expansionist in neither ambition nor design.<\/p>\n

“No country is our target as long as they don’t attack member countries,” he said, drawing a clear red line between collective self-defence and offensive military posturing.<\/p>\n

He also stressed that the character of all three signatories made the alliance inherently non-threatening to the broader region.<\/p>\n

“T\u00fcrkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan are not expansionist countries,” Fidan said, signalling that the pact was designed to provide security and stability \u2014 not to project power or pursue territorial ambitions.<\/p>\n

Why now?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The foreign minister said the agreement emerged from a genuine strategic necessity: the recognition that the Middle East and its surrounding region had entered a period of dangerous and sustained instability that required a coordinated response from major regional powers.<\/p>\n

The trilateral grouping brings together three of the Muslim world’s most significant military and economic powers: T\u00fcrkiye, a NATO member with one of the alliance’s largest armies; Saudi Arabia, the Arab world’s dominant military spender; and Pakistan, a nuclear-armed state with one of Asia’s largest standing armies.<\/p>\n
