A senior Iranian official confirmed that Pakistan conveyed the message to Tehran on Tuesday and Tehran\u2019s response was that \u201cIran does not control the Houthis\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Houthis struck an airbase in Khamis Mushait and oil infrastructure in nearby cities \u200con Tuesday, wounding 73 people, in one of the biggest attacks on Saudi Arabia since the start of the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran in February.<\/p>\n<p>Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said on Wednesday that Saudi warplanes carried out 54 airstrikes across various Yemeni provinces over the past 12 hours, adding that they would \u201cnot go unanswered and unpunished\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The escalating conflict, which represents a second theatre of war to threaten global energy supplies, comes as Iran and the United States wage their \u200bbiggest declared wave of tit-for-tat attacks on shipping in the Gulf region since their war began.<\/p>\n<p>Pakistan\u2019s warning to Iran carries significant weight because of its defence pact with Saudi Arabia and \u200bTurkey.<\/p>\n<p>While officials in Islamabad stressed any military role would be confined to defending Saudi territory, Pakistani Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said attacks spilling into the \u2060kingdom could trigger a joint security arrangement involving Riyadh, Ankara and Islamabad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn aggression on one country will be considered an aggression on all three countries,\u201d Asif said on Pakistani TV.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no ambiguity or \u200bdoubt\u2026 Unprovoked aggression or spillover\u2026 into Saudi Arabia will definitely make this agreement operational.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Pakistani defence ministry, foreign ministry and the military did not respond to a Reuters request for comment.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"wqM0tBaS7A\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/pakistanintheworld.pk\/live\/chief-of-defense-forces-pakistan-in-tehran-meets-president-supreme-leader-of-national-security-speaker-exploring-peace-in-middle-east\/\">Chief of Defense Forces Pakistan in Tehran Meets President, Supreme Leader of National Security, Speaker Exploring Peace in Middle East<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Chief of Defense Forces Pakistan in Tehran Meets President, Supreme Leader of National Security, Speaker Exploring Peace in Middle East&#8221; &#8212; Pakistan In the World\" src=\"https:\/\/pakistanintheworld.pk\/live\/chief-of-defense-forces-pakistan-in-tehran-meets-president-supreme-leader-of-national-security-speaker-exploring-peace-in-middle-east\/embed\/#?secret=kL2LQuC5aF#?secret=wqM0tBaS7A\" data-secret=\"wqM0tBaS7A\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>FEARS OF PROXY WAR \u200bTURNING INTO WIDER REGIONAL CRISIS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pakistan\u2019s intervention, after years of balancing ties with Saudi Arabia and Iran, has underscored the seriousness of the Houthi attacks. The message to Tehran is clear: rein in the Houthis or risk turning a proxy conflict into a broader regional security crisis, the sources said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Two Iranian sources said Tehran had told the Houthis last \u200bweek to carry out attacks on Saudi Arabia.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Tehran promised additional funding and weapons, they said, while several Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commanders had travelled to Yemen to help coordinate the attacks.<\/p>\n<p>The regional diplomat said Islamabad was \u200cseeking to \u2060restrain the Houthis before the escalation reached a point where Riyadh could press Pakistan to play a more active role in defending it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPakistan has an agreement with Saudi Arabia, but I am hopeful the situation will not reach the point where Pakistan has to practically step in,\u201d the diplomat told Reuters. \u201cIt will pursue a diplomatic solution for now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>PAKISTANI SUPPORT FOR SAUDIS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Pakistani source said Saudi officials had met senior Pakistani and Turkish military representatives in Riyadh to coordinate their response. The three countries agreed that their troops would not enter Yemen and that any response would be launched from Saudi territory, the source added.<\/p>\n<p>A \u200bsecond Pakistani source said no decision had been \u200bmade to join retaliatory strikes, stressing that \u2060its military pact with Riyadh was defensive and limited to protecting Saudi territory. Pakistani forces could provide military, technical, ground or air support within Saudi Arabia, but would not take part in combat operations on foreign soil, the source said.<\/p>\n<p>The pressure campaign waged by Iran and the Houthis could have the \u200bopposite effect to that intended by Tehran, the regional diplomat said.<\/p>\n<p>By targeting Gulf security in a bid to pressure Washington over its blockade of \u200bIranian ports, Tehran risks driving \u2060Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Turkey and other U.S.-aligned states into closer security coordination rather than fracturing their ties.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>TRUMP\u2019S BLOCKADE OF IRAN SET TO CONTINUE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Regional officials also see little sign that Washington is prepared to relent.<\/p>\n<p>President Donald Trump appears committed to maintaining the U.S. blockade until Iran reaches an agreement with Washington, the diplomat said, while Qatar is quietly exploring new proposals aimed at bringing both sides back to negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>Another regional source said Saudi \u2060Arabia\u2019s military response \u200bwould remain focused on the Houthis rather than Iran itself. Nor do Saudi officials believe Houthi attacks will achieve Tehran\u2019s \u200bbroader objective of ending the U.S. blockade.<\/p>\n<p>Riyadh is not expected to press Washington to lift the blockade, that source said, stressing that Trump believes sustained economic coercion is the most effective pathway to negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe question is how much pain Iran can absorb, \u200band for how long,\u201d the source said. \u201cTrump does not want a military solution. He wants to squeeze them through the blockade.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Pakistan | Between Saudi Arabia and Iran | Mediation Counter Productive ?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Middle East observer, Islamabad based journalist Mr. Tazeen Akhtar adds to the story that Saudi Arabia has exerted pressure on Pakistan to use its influence on Iran as the mediator to control the Houthis if Pakistan can not fight or attack Houthis directly. This state of affairs is leading Pakistan towards a situation where the Credit (Mediation Islamabad Talks) can become counter productive.<\/p>\n<p>&#8221; There are rumors in Islamabad that Saudis have asked Pakistan to return $3 billion that were placed in Pakistani account to make it stable for international trade. Pakistan has recently sold Euro Bonds of the same worth in international market. This context gives rise to the impression that Saudis are taking their dollars back, Tazeen Akhtar shared.<\/p>\n<p>He said, Pakistan will have to stand with Saudi if the Houthis continue attacks. Pakistan is rapidly losing the space for playing on two sides. Iran was not fully satisfied with Pakistan&#8217;s mediatory role.
