“I believe this platform can facilitate not only greater engagement in research and knowledge-sharing, but also stronger commercial partnerships and trade opportunities,” she said.

The ambassador highlighted the importance of closer cooperation between Pakistan and the Philippines in the rice sector, describing rice as not only a major commodity in bilateral trade but also a symbol of a longstanding connection between the two countries.

Dr Rabbani recalled that Pakistan’s association with the Philippine rice sector dates back to the 1960s, when the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), based in the Philippines, played a pioneering role in rice research and development.

She said Pakistan benefited from the cooperation, including through the introduction of the IRRI-6 rice variety. The ambassador noted that the longstanding connection had now taken a new dimension, as Pakistan was exporting IRRI-6 rice back to the Philippines.
