Her appeal reflects Riyadh’s concerns about the wider implications of Houthi activities for the security of the Red Sea and surrounding waterways.

The Red Sea is a vital international shipping corridor connecting Europe and Asia through the Suez Canal. Disruptions in the area can force vessels to take longer routes, increase transportation costs, and affect global supply chains.

Saudi Arabia has repeatedly emphasised the importance of protecting maritime navigation and preventing attacks that threaten regional stability. The kingdom has also sought broader international cooperation to address security challenges linked to Yemen’s prolonged conflict.

The Houthis, who control Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, and significant parts of the country, have developed military capabilities that include missiles and drones. Their activities have raised concerns among regional governments and international shipping operators.

Princess Reema’s call comes amid continuing tensions across the Middle East, where conflicts and security threats have increased pressure on diplomatic efforts to maintain stability.

A coordinated international response could involve intelligence-sharing, maritime security cooperation, diplomatic engagement and measures aimed at limiting threats to commercial shipping.

However, any sustained effort would also face challenges involving Yemen’s political divisions, humanitarian conditions and the broader regional rivalries contributing to the conflict. The appeal underscores Saudi Arabia’s position that international cooperation is necessary to address threats to maritime security and regional stability.

Pakistan in the World – September 2026

Middle East Monitoring Desk Islamabad Saudi Arabia’s Ambassador to the United States, Princess Reema bint Bandar Al Saud, has called for a coordinated international effort to counter the Houthi movement in Yemen, highlighting concerns about regional security, maritime routes, and threats to international trade.
