Federal Minister for Climate Change Ms Zartaj Gull has emphasized upon the provinces to impose a ban on plastic bags instead of asking for more time on the pressure of industry owners. She has said that Industry owners earn Billions and Trillions but are not ready to spend only 2 % of their income on the protection of the environment.<\/h3>\n

The minister was addressing the participants of a workshop at Pak EPA head office Islamabad that was held by Pakistan Environment Protection Agency (Pak- EPA) and Community Development Council (CDC) jointly on Wednesday 06 Jan 2020. Ms Zartaj Gull was chief guest in the concluding session where she distributed certificates to the participants that hailed from 20 different institutions and organizations. The participants were sensitized how to observe the impacts of the environment and how to minimize them.<\/h3>\n

The Minister in her keynote address said that Industries get clearance certificates regarding the environment by bribing the concerned staff that affects the environment protection measures in the country. She presented the example from her own constituency and shared that DG Cement is a very large industry but they are not giving compliance to the directions from the government.<\/h3>\n

“When we questioned ,\u00a0 the administration of DG Cement replied that they have contributed 350 plants to the Prime Minister’s Clean & Green Pakistan campaign. This can not be termed as a major contribution from such a big industry while the philanthropists only were donating more than 10 thousand plants.” Minister continued.<\/h3>\n

Regarding the ban on Plastic Bags, the Minister said that we have banned it in the Federal area. Now provinces are supposed to move forward. Unfortunately , industrialists in the province are very strong. They pressurize the provincial governments and succeed in taking more time. The Supreme Court has also issued directions to put a complete ban on plastic. The provinces should follow the instructions and take steps to implement this ban.<\/h3>\n

To a question about turning green belts for other purposes and cutting of trees in federal capital, the Minister replied that neither a green belt can be altered nor a tree can be cut without prior permission. The Prime Minister’s vision for Clean & Green Pakistan is clear. If someone is found doing that practice, the authorities will take severe action.<\/h3>\n

The Minister temed the waste water as a major threat to the environment. She drew attention of CDA and WASA towards the waste water management by the industries and suggested that their staff can have better understanding of the matter from Pak – EPA that possess expertise in this regard. She said that Safety of the environment is the responsibility of all. We can keep our environment clean only when everyone works as a team and with social responsibility.<\/h3>\n

In her concluding remarks, the Minister congratulated DG Pak- EPA , Ms Farzana Altaf Shah and Chairperson CDC, Ms Meera’n Malik for holding a well organized workshop and for engaging different stakeholders for a cause that is commonly beneficiary for all.<\/h3>\n

Ms Zartaj Gull appreciated the participants for their interest in environment protection. She encouraged them to further spread the knowledge and information they gathered in the workshop to other colleagues and friends as well.<\/h3>\n
