\"\"Islamabad; 25 Jan 2021 – The Australian High Commissioner to Pakistan, Dr Geoffrey Shaw marked Australia Day (26 January) with a special message. He said:<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/h3>\n

\u00a0\u201cAustralia Day, when Australians celebrate our nation\u2019s achievements and its people, is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the relationship between our two great countries.<\/span><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/h3>\n

\u00a0<\/u><\/u><\/span>Australia was one of the first countries to formally recognise the new nation of Pakistan in 1947. Since then, the relationship has strengthened and deepened. We have much in common\u00a0\u2013 including our shared love of cricket and historical ties \u2013\u00a0which provides a solid foundation to advance the relationship\u00a0further.<\/span><\/span><\/u><\/u><\/h3>\n

Our\u00a0strong\u00a0linkages are shown by the more than 80,000 people of Pakistani origin who now call Australia home.<\/span><\/span><\/u><\/u><\/h3>\n

\u00a0<\/u><\/u><\/span>And many Pakistani students choose to study in Australia\u2019s high quality universities and other educational institutions. These young alumni\u00a0contribute to Pakistan\u2019s bright future\u00a0and build on their links with Australia.<\/span><\/span><\/u><\/u><\/h3>\n

Australia\u00a0is a supporter of\u00a0Pakistan\u2019s prosperity, stability and development.\u00a0In 2020, Australia has re-oriented its development cooperation to\u00a0help\u00a0Pakistan deal with the COVID<\/a>19 emergency, such as by funding\u00a0the purchase\u00a0of ventilators,\u00a0supporting Ehsaas nutrition centres\u00a0and assisting women in lockdown.<\/span><\/span><\/u><\/u><\/h3>\n

\u00a0<\/u><\/u><\/span>This has been in addition to our long-running development cooperation to better manage scarce water resources,\u00a0improve agricultural productivity\u00a0and promote gender equality.<\/span><\/span><\/u><\/u><\/h3>\n

Growing trade and investment will be critical to the post-pandemic recovery.\u00a0There is significant potential to unlock\u00a0in our growing business relationship,\u00a0particularly\u00a0in education and agriculture. Australia also offers excellence in innovation, science and technology.<\/span><\/span><\/u><\/u><\/h3>\n
