Ethiopia Embassy in Pakistan Celebrates 127th Anniversary of Adwa Victory

Speaking on the occasion, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the FDRE to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan H.E. Jemal Beker Abdula said the heroic people of Ethiopia had registered a big triumph on this day by fighting imperial powers on its land. “We are the only nation in Africa which never colonized in the past and that has only been made sure by our brave people.”

He informed the guests that Adwa is an icon of unity, heroism and perseverance led to defeat of the modern imperial military that became a foundation for African struggle for freedom and liberation. The victory of Adwa ignited global resistance against colonialism in black Africa and anti-colonial movements across the globe. The spirit of Pan-Africanism was born and expanded since then.

The Battle of Adwa which took place on March 1, 1896 runs across the annals of both Ethiopian and African history, as the first victory of black Africa against a European colonial power. The nostalgia of the war still haunted not only Ethiopians but also fellow Africans and the entire black people in the world. The victory depicted the defiance and pride of Ethiopians, an attitude which was inherited by the national liberation movements in Africa in their struggle against colonialism.

 Ambassador said during the media briefing so far more than 100 businessmen have signed up for the historic trade delegation flying to Addis Ababa on March 05 for exploring business and investment opportunities in Ethiopia. He said the Government of Ethiopia made an all-out preparation to welcome the first and historic trade delegation from Pakistan to Ethiopia-Land of Origin.The ambassador along with the guests also cut the cake which was followed by Ethiopia traditional coffee ceremony.
