
Rabat – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Morocco has stated that the Republic of Panama, a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, considers the autonomy initiative to be “the most serious, credible, and realistic basis for settling the regional dispute” over the Moroccan Sahara.
The meeting between Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Residing Abroad, Nasser Bourita, and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Panama, Javier Martinez-Acha Vásquez, who is on a working visit to the Kingdom today, June 16.
Furthermore, the Panamanian minister explained, during a press conference following the meeting that the autonomy initiative presented by Morocco in 2007 “must be the only solution in the future,” affirming his country’s clear support for the autonomy initiative in order to move toward a sustainable agreement on this conflict.
Panama’s support for the Kingdom’s autonomy initiative to resolve the conflict over the Moroccan Sahara comes after the country’s decision to sever all ties with the so-called “Sahrawi Republic” in November 2024.
In the same joint statement, the Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of Panama affirmed their commitment to the sanctity of the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
