Finnish Company Metso plans to provide technical equipment and train local human resource in Pakistan’s Copper Mining Sector

ISLAMABAD: 29 Sep 2025 – Finnish company Metso has announced a significant investment in providing technical equipment in Pakistan’s copper mining sector. The investment will focus on providing modern technology, mining equipment, and services.

The announcement came following a meeting between Ms. Piia Karhu, President of Minerals at Metso, and Pakistan’s Minister of State for Finance and Railways, Mr. Bilal Azhar Kayani. Ms. Karhu was accompanied by Finland’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Hannu Ripatti, and Honorary Consul General, Veli Airola.

The discussions centered on investment prospects in Pakistan’s mineral sector of lithium, iron ore, gold mining but mainly focusing on copper mining. Metso’s commitment includes supplying advanced technological equipment and expertise, which the company also provides to countries like Saudi Arabia and Zambia.

Ms. Karhu confirmed that Metso would soon establish a corporate office in Pakistan after finalizing the service agreement and legal status.

The company is dedicated to local employment, stating that job opportunities for the local population will gradually increase once the Reko Diq project becomes operational. Furthermore, Metso plans to provide technical training to the local human resource in addition to installing equipment.

Minister of State Bilal Azhar Kayani lauded Metso’s commitment to investing, bringing modern equipment, and offering services in the mineral sector. He highlighted the critical role of improving the ML-1 and ML-3 railway lines for the timely completion of the Reko Diq project, which is targeted for activation by December 2028.

Mr. Kayani noted that the government, with support from the Asian Development Bank, is striving for progress in the project by June 2026, with feasibility studies already complete. He expressed optimism that the project’s groundbreaking ceremony would take place in June 2026.

Both parties agreed to hold a follow-up meeting with technical experts from the Ministry of Railways to further advance investment and cooperation opportunities.
