Prosperity Party Registers Landslide Victory in Ethiopia’s 7th General Elections

Addis Ababa : The National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) has officially announced the results of the 7th General Elections, declaring a landslide victory for the Prosperity Party.

Following a transparent process that saw the participation of over 54 million registered voters, the results mark a significant milestone in Ethiopia’s democratic journey.

The official results of the 7th General Elections were announced by the officials of NEBE during a ceremony held in Addis Ababa to brief the media on official results.

The Prosperity Party secured a thumping majority, winning 438 out of the 486 contested seats in the House of Peoples’ Representatives, providing the party with the clear mandate required to form a new government under the Ethiopian Constitution.

The party’s seats distribution across regions included 167 seats in Oromia, 117 in Amhara, 35 in Southern Ethiopia, 28 in Central Ethiopia, 20 in Addis Ababa, 19 in Somali, 17 in Southwest Ethiopia, 13 in Sidama, 8 in Benishangul-Gumuz, 7 in Afar, 3 in Gambella, and 2 each in Dire Dawa and Harari.

Opposition and independent candidates, including representatives from the Ethiopian Unity Party, the Afar People’s Party, the Gumuz People’s Democratic Party, the National Movement of Amhara and the New Generation Party, collectively secured the remaining 48 parliamentary seats.

The Prosperity Party also achieved overwhelming success in regional council elections, reflecting broad national support. Highlights of these victories include 523 out of 528 seats in Oromia, 257 of 277 in Amhara, 214 of 252 in the Somali region, 182 in South Ethiopia, 176 in Gambella, 175 in Sidama, 161 in Dire Dawa, 145 in Benishangul-Gumuz, 144 in South West Ethiopia, 143 in Central Ethiopia, 134 in Addis Ababa, 124 in Afar, and 32 in Harari.

The elections were held recently across 1,139 constituencies including 501 for the House of Peoples’ Representatives and 638 for regional councils.

The elections were held in a peaceful and transparent manner which was endorsed by international observers, including missions from the African Union (AU) and IGAD, who certified the transparency of the overall electoral process across the country.
