Malaysian authorities moved to counter the spread of fabricated election-related content as voters headed to the polls in the Negeri Sembilan state election, warning that false claims circulating on social media could mislead the public and undermine confidence in the electoral process.
The Election Commission of Malaysia (EC) identified two widely shared graphics as fake. One falsely claimed that a political coalition was breaking apart, while another purported to show early voting results before ballot counting had begun. The EC said the graphics did not reflect official information and urged the public to rely only on verified announcements.
The commission explained that counting of early votes would only begin after voting concluded on election day, making any purported early results circulating beforehand impossible. Officials stressed that election information should be obtained through official EC channels rather than unverified social media posts.
The Office of Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi also rejected a quotation attributed to him in one of the fabricated graphics, saying he had never made the statement. The denial formed part of a broader effort by Malaysian authorities to curb election-related misinformation during the campaign period.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil had previously urged social media users, particularly voters in Negeri Sembilan, to verify information through mainstream news organizations and official sources. He warned that recycled content, fabricated graphics, and misleading statements were increasingly being shared online during the election campaign.
The misinformation emerged during a closely watched state election seen as an important political test for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s governing coalition following recent political developments in other Malaysian states. Although state elections do not directly affect the federal government’s parliamentary majority, analysts view them as an indicator of public sentiment ahead of Malaysia’s next general election.
Malaysia has in recent years faced repeated incidents of election-related misinformation, prompting election authorities and government agencies to intensify public awareness campaigns. Officials have consistently advised voters to confirm election schedules, vote counts, and political statements through official Election Commission announcements and credible news organizations before sharing information online.
The EC reiterated that only official election updates published through its verified platforms should be regarded as authoritative, particularly during polling and vote-counting periods when false information can spread rapidly across social media.
