Fozia Janjua, a young and talented woman of Pakistani origin from Chakwal district of Punjab has been elected First Democratic female, Muslim, Pakistani American Mayor of Town Mount Laurel situated in the state of New Jersey USA. Fozia Janjua was selected as Mayor on 04 Jan 2024.Earlier she was serving as Councilwoman. Fozia graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a degree in Sociology.
She has said on this auspicious occasion, “I am deeply honored and humbled to have the opportunity to serve as the first Democratic female, Muslim, and Pakistani mayor of Mount Laurel, NJ. This historic moment represents not only a personal milestone but also a significant step forward for our community.”
Fozia Janjua further noted, “It underscores the principles of inclusivity and diversity that make our town so special. I am committed to working tirelessly to serve the best interests of all our residents. Together, we will build a stronger, more united, and prosperous Mount Laurel for everyone to thrive in and be proud of. I look forward to the journey ahead.
Fozia brings her experience in community organizing and local government public service to the role of Board Member At-Large.An educator who has a passion for service and social justice, Fozia is a founding board member of a local nonprofit called CommunitySJP whose mission is to unite communities through service and promote civic engagement.
A longtime community organizer and public servant, Fozia has helped people navigate the housing, schooling, and justice system throughout the years. At an early age, Fozia started volunteering, working with, and advocating for the marginalized members of her local community.
As a first-generation Pakistani American, and one of three girls, she considers herself fortunate to be born in one of the most inclusive cities in the world, San Francisco, California, and raised by two very progressive, socially conscious parents who instilled the values of hard work, education, and especially the concept of giving back.
In Township Reorganization meeting, She touted Mount Laurel Township’s past accomplishments, mentioned her anticipation of future achievements and praised the municipality’s diversity since she first assumed a Council seat in 2021.
“We have celebrated cultural events like Juneteenth and the holiday tradition of the Menorah, and providing these events showcases the rich tapestry of our community’s heritage. Ultimately, it is not just about recognizing our differences, it is about using them to unite and strengthen us, Fozia said.
Chakwal is one of many backward districts of Punjab where clean drinking water even is a blessing for the local population. It is despite , this district has produced high level politicians, generals, bureaucrats and business tycoons. Chakwal is historical city in the mountainous region in Northern Punjab.
