Rabat : 24 July 2025 – The Republic of Gambia has once again declared its unwavering support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara region, endorsing the Autonomy Initiative as the only credible, serious, and realistic solution to the long-standing territorial dispute.
This reaffirmation came in a joint communiqué following high-level talks in Rabat between Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and Gambian Foreign Minister Sering Modou Njie.
The communiqué emphasized Gambia’s recognition of Morocco’s territorial integrity, including the Sahara, and praised the Kingdom’s efforts within the United Nations framework to reach a just and lasting resolution.
Both ministers reiterated their backing of UN Security Council Resolution 2756, which calls for a compromise-based political solution grounded in realism and pragmatism.
Minister Njie also highlighted the growing international consensus around Morocco’s Autonomy Plan, a momentum driven by King Mohammed VI, and recalled the symbolic opening of Gambia’s Consulate General in Dakhla in January 2020—the first diplomatic mission to be established in the region.
The meeting further underscored the strength of Morocco-Gambia relations and their shared commitment to regional stability, African solidarity, and multilateral cooperation.
