Lagos; Monitoring Desk – The appointment of new service chiefs has been generating reactions in manifolds and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described the development as “belated.”
Speaking via a statement on Tuesday, January 26, the opposition party said the appointment is coming at the wrong time because much “harm had already been done to our national security.”
PDP said the security situation of the country has degenerated into an abysmal state, leading to the “loss of lives, economic recession with excruciating hardship as well as widened divisions.”
While attributing President Muhammadu Buhari’s “unpatriotic, self-conceited and narrow-minded approach to leadership” to the escalated insecurity, the PDP told the new service chiefs to restore professionalism and “brace up to the challenges of our nation.”
PDP also called for the probe of the outgoing service chiefs, saying during their inglorious tenure many drops of rain fell leaving tons of debris behind in terms of security sabotage.
The opposition party said the outgoing service chiefs have been alleged to have engaged in looting and sabotage of the security efforts.
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Buhari on Tuesday announced the appointment of new service chiefs following the resignation of their predecessors.
The Nigerian leader in a tweet via his official Twitter handle noted that he has accepted the immediate resignation of the service chiefs and their retirement from service.
Those involved are the Chief of Defence Staff, General Abayomi Olonisakin; Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Tukur Buratai; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok Ekwe Ibas; and Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar.
