ISLAMABAD: Monitoring Desk – Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has announced a nationwide petition opposing what he calls “Brussels’ war plans,” criticizing European Union strategies to provide long-term military and financial support for Ukraine.
Orbán made the announcement following the European Political Community summit in Copenhagen, where EU leaders discussed expanded coordination to help Ukraine withstand Russian aggression. The Hungarian leader accused Brussels of pushing Europe “toward war,” describing the proposed strategy as “Europe pays, Ukrainians fight, and Russia will be exhausted.”
He claimed that since Hungary refused to endorse these initiatives, the EU has “turned against” his government — alleging campaigns of “espionage, fake news, and legal manipulation.”
Orbán’s statement aligns with his long-standing opposition to EU military involvement in Ukraine. He has frequently argued that continued Western aid risks escalating the conflict, positioning Hungary as an outlier among NATO and EU member states.
