ASTANA: 21 Oct 2025 – The “Middle Corridor Development” (Trans-Caspian International Transport Route) joint project was presented with the participation of President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

The Heads of State were briefed on the ongoing systematic work being carried out by Kazakh and Azerbaijani specialists to develop the Middle Corridor.

Presidential Advisor of Kazakhstan Assel Zhanassova presented a plan for the development of this key transport and logistics route connecting China and the Central Asian countries with the states of Europe.

It was reported to Presidents Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Ilham Aliyev that the main driver of growth for the Middle Corridor is the increasing volume of freight traffic from China to Azerbaijan.

At present, cargo transit from the Chinese border to the ports of Georgia takes 15–18 days. According to forecasts, by 2030 freight flows along this route may triple.

During the presentation, the Heads of State were informed about specific measures and initiatives aimed at improving the efficiency and competitiveness of the Middle Corridor, as well as strengthening its role as a vital transit link in the Eurasian region.

The Middle Corridor, as the main transport-logistics route connecting China and Central Asian countries with European states, plays a strategic role in strengthening regional and intercontinental trade.

It was noted that shipments from China to Azerbaijan are steadily increasing and are projected to triple by 2030 compared to current levels, further underscoring the project’s importance.

The heads of state were also informed about specific steps and initiatives aimed at increasing the efficiency and competitiveness of the Middle Corridor.

The Middle Corridor, also known as the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR), is a multimodal trade and transport corridor connecting China and Central Asia to Europe via the South Caucasus and Türkiye.
This route provides an alternative to shipping through Russia or the Suez Canal, becoming increasingly strategic due to sanctions against Russia and for shortening transit times.
Route: The corridor starts in China, passes through Kazakhstan, crosses the Caspian Sea, goes through Azerbaijan and Georgia, and then continues through Türkiye to reach Europe.
Multimodal: It involves a combination of rail, sea, and road transport. For example, cargo can travel by rail from China to a port in Kazakhstan, then be ferried across the Caspian
Sea to Azerbaijan, and finally continue by rail or road through Georgia and Türkiye to Europe.
    Key advantages and significance
Alternative to Russia: It bypasses Russia, making it a viable option for businesses due to sanctions and other geopolitical concerns.
Shorter transit times: The route is significantly shorter than traditional sea routes, reducing overall transit duration.
Economic and strategic importance: It is a key component of the new Eurasian geopolitical landscape, fostering trade and cooperation between the participating countries.
Regional cooperation: Countries along the route are actively investing in and upgrading infrastructure to enhance the corridor’s competitiveness and capacity.
