CASABLANCA / Morocco: Officially inaugurated on March 6, 1955 under the name of Marcel-Cerdan stadium, in tribute to the famous Franco-Moroccan world champion boxer, before being renamed “stade d’Honneur” a year later, it was closed in 1981, with the objective of increasing its capacity, installing the electronic panel and building an indoor multi-sports hall and an indoor Olympic swimming pool next to the stadium, with a view to hosting the Mediterranean Games of 1983.
Under the name Mohammed V stadium, it officially reopened its doors on August 21, 1983 in the presence of the late His Majesty Hassan II, on the occasion of the final of the 1982-1983 Throne Cup between Raja Club Athletic and Club Olympique de Casablanca.
Moreover, the matches played in this temple of football by the various national teams, especially the A team, have a very particular character and a special taste.
Thus, many national coaches have preferred and prefer to schedule the Atlas Lions matches there, due to the enthusiasm of the Casablanca public and its uninterrupted encouragement.
“Donor” has, moreover, been feared by the biggest African clubs during the Champions League or CAF Cup matches against the Wydad and Raja teams. The Mohammed V Sports Complex is also among the stadiums that will host the major continental football event, in this case the 2025 African Cup of Nations (CAN).
After having undergone several renovation works in the past, it has recently undergone in-depth work that concerned all of its outbuildings so that it can meet the standards and requirements of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and thus raise it to the level of world-renowned sports infrastructures for the organization of global competitions.
Thus, the Mohammed V sports complex, in its new configuration, combines both the ambition of modernization and the desire to preserve and safeguard its historical and heritage value.
The architectural aspect chosen as part of this modernization aims to give a new look to the building, while revealing the charm of this jewel so dear to the hearts of Casablanca residents, in particular, and Moroccans in general.

The redevelopment project of this building is part of the program to upgrade Moroccan stadiums in anticipation of the organization of the next major sporting events in the Kingdom (preparations for hosting the CAN 2025 and the World Cup 2030).
The Kingdom of Morocco is pursuing, under the leadership of the king Mohammed VI, a genuine policy of developing its sports infrastructure; this policy, which aims to meet the international standards required by FIFA and CAF, consolidates the Kingdom’s position as a continental, regional and global sports hub.
The Mohammed V Sports Complex in Casablanca is one of many projects, given that Morocco will continue to invest massively in its sports infrastructure (among others: the Hassan II Stadium in Benslimane, the reconstruction of the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex in Rabat, the extension and upgrading of the Grand Stade de Tangier, the rehabilitation of the large stadiums in Fez, Marrakech and Agadir and the reconstruction of the Al Barid stadium and the Prince Héritier Moulay El Hassan stadium in Rabat).
