Vietnam welcomes Putin’s proposal to resume direct peace talks with Ukraine

ISLAMABAD: A spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam on May 12 welcomed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s recent proposal to resume direct peace talks with Ukraine.

“We welcome the recent proposal made on May 11 by Russian President Vladimir Putin to resume direct negotiations with Ukraine,” said spokesperson Pham Thu Hang in response to journalists’ question regarding Putin’s proposal.

She voiced Vietnam’s consistent position to support the settlement of disputes and disagreements through peaceful means, via dialogue, in accordance with international law and the United Nations Charter, taking into account the legitimate interests of all relevant parties, for the sake of peace, stability, cooperation, and development in the region and the world at large.

Putin said on May 11 proposed direct talks with Ukraine in Istanbul on May 15 in an attempt to “eliminate the root causes of the conflict” and “to achieve the restoration of a long-term, lasting peace.”

The Russian President said that he would speak to Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan about the talks, which he said could lead to a ceasefire.
Vietnam persistently calls for peaceful solution to conflict in Ukraine

Addressing the 11th Emergency Special Session (ESS) on Ukraine of the UN General Assembly on February 24, Giang stressed that such a resolution must be based on international law and the UN Charter, particularly the fundamental principles of respecting independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, and refraining from the use or threat of force.

Sharing the deep concerns of the international community over the prolonged conflict’s consequences and negative impacts, the ambassador called on all parties to immediately cease hostilities, avoid actions that escalate tensions, prioritize the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure, and facilitate urgent humanitarian assistance for affected populations.

He voiced Vietnam’s support for the United Nations’ role in maintaining international peace and security and commended constructive initiatives aimed at fostering dialogue to end the conflict based on international law and the UN Charter, taking into account the legitimate roles and interests of all concerned parties.

The Vietnamese representative emphasized that solutions to the conflict must be achieved through consensus and the participation of all directly involved parties, rather than exacerbating divisions and confrontations.
On this occasion, he reaffirmed Vietnam’s readiness to make positive contributions to the diplomatic process as well as the reconstruction and recovery efforts in Ukraine, in pursuit of regional and global peace and stability.
