Islamabad; 16 April 2020 – The Republic of Yemen welcomes the statement of the Security Council that welcomes the announcement of a ceasefire by the leadership of the “Coalition to Support Legitimacy in Yemen 12-04-2020”.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Yemen welcomes the statement issued by the Security Council on Friday 10 April 2020, regarding the announcement by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, on behalf of the Coalition to Support Legitimacy in Yemen, of two week ceasefire in support of the Secretary General’s call and the positive response of our Government to this initiative.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterates the Government’s response and compliance with the ceasefire initiative as of Thursday 09 April 2020, in accordance with the directives of His Excellency President Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi, and in support of the Secretary General’s call to combat the potential outbreak of Corona virus pandemic, and to alleviate the suffering of the Yemeni people and create a conducive environment for the success of the efforts of the Special Envoy of the Secretary General for Yemen to resume the peace process in accordance with the national principles and agreed terms of reference.

The Ministry condemns the continued escalation by the Houthi militias and their refusal to commit to the ceasefire initiative, which presents a window of opportunity to end their absurd war in Yemen and to unite efforts to confront the risks of an outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs calls upon the international community and the Security Council to exert pressure on the Houthi militia to commit and comply with the ceasefire initiative, and to hold them responsible for the consequences of their continued intransigence and refusal, especially after confirming the first case of the novel Coronavirus in Yemen.
