ISLAMABAD : Monitoring Desk – The foreign ministers of Egypt, Algeria, and Tunisia discussed recent developments in Libya during a meeting held by the three ministers on Saturday on the sidelines of the Second Ministerial Conference of the Russia–Africa Partnership Forum.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s support for reaching a comprehensive political settlement led by Libyans themselves and owned nationally, with the aim of ending division and restoring security and stability, according to a statement by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.

Abdelatty stressed that any successful path to resolving the crisis must be based on consensus among Libyan parties and support for United Nations efforts, without foreign interference or the imposition of external solutions.

He also underscored the importance of unifying Libya’s executive institutions and creating a conducive environment for holding presidential and parliamentary elections simultaneously, as the primary pathway forward.

Abdelatty emphasized the need for a stable security environment, including the withdrawal of all foreign forces, foreign fighters, and mercenaries from Libyan territory.

The three ministers agreed to continue close coordination and consultation within the framework of the trilateral mechanism linking Egypt, Algeria, and Tunisia.

Last month , The United Nations and Algeria reiterated that any political pathway in Libya must be “Libyan-led and Libyan-owned,” stressing the need for inclusive national elections that reflect the free will of Libyans and help bring an end to the country’s long transitional period.

The statement followed a meeting in Algiers between the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Libya, Hana Tetteh, and Algeria’s Foreign Minister, Ahmed Attaf, held as part of ongoing consultations on reviving the political process.

Tetteh delivered a detailed briefing on the political roadmap she presented to the UN Security Council in August, outlining its goals, phases and the challenges facing its implementation.

Minister Attaf reaffirmed Algeria’s backing for UN efforts to restore stability in Libya, calling elections “the only viable route” out of the current crisis. He also stressed Algeria’s firm rejection of any foreign interference in Libya’s internal affairs.

Attaf further briefed the UN envoy on the outcomes of the 6 November consultative meeting of the Tripartite Mechanism for Libya’s neighbouring states, hosted by Algeria. He said regional efforts are intended to complement the UN mission’s work, particularly in advancing political dialogue and helping create conditions for credible and successful elections.
