ISLAMABAD : Monitoring Desk – The Turkish-American community in New York City, USA, demonstrated in Times Square on Sunday against the city’s Mayor, Zahran Mamdani. The protest was against a social media post by Zohran Mamdani in which he commented on some events of 1915 related to the Ottoman Empire and Karabakh.
Zohran Mamdani had said in his post on X on April 24 that 1.5 million Armenians were killed by the Ottoman Empire in 1915. The mayor also claimed that in 2020, Turkey and Azerbaijan had jointly attacked Armenian citizens in the Nagorno-Karabakh region.
Turkey opposes the designation of the 1915 events as “genocide.” It maintains that both sides suffered heavy casualties in the events. Turkey has also offered to form a joint commission of historians to resolve the historical dispute.
Turkish organizations and citizens expressed dissatisfaction with Mamdani’s statement and called on him to refrain from posting political posts and adopt a balanced mindset.
The protesters stressed that the events between 1915 and 1923 should be examined in the light of historical facts and that rhetoric that deepens misunderstandings should be avoided.
