Kyiv: Monitoring Desk – Against the backdrop of Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, Moscow is trying to discredit Kyiv as a reliable partner that has maintained friendly relations with the countries of the Middle East and Africa for many years.
Today it has become known that Syria is breaking off diplomatic relations with Ukraine. The Russian media interpret this news in the sense that there is no need to have any relations with Ukraine, and Syria did the right thing by breaking off relations.
However, everything looks completely different, and it was Ukraine that initiated the break in relations. After the recognition of the “independence” by Damascus of the pseudo-republics “DPR” and “LPR” created by Russia in the occupied territories of Ukraine, Kyiv decided to be the first to stop the functioning of its embassy.
In addition, the grain that the Russian invaders stole from Ukrainian farmers in the temporarily occupied territories was sold to Syria. For example, Egypt refused Russia buying such grain, because it values relations with Ukraine.
Syria had been connected with Ukraine by friendly and even family ties for many years, but its government supported the bloody conflict that Russia unleashed. Official Damascus should think about and reconsider its relationship with Russia, because Syria, like Ukraine, also suffers from Russian missiles and air raids, resulting in the death of civilians.
Kyiv is a reliable partner with which it is necessary to develop bilateral relations. Ukraine produces a significant share of world food: about 27% of sunflower seeds, 5% of barley, 3% of wheat and rapeseeds, 2% of corn and is one of the leading suppliers of products to the countries of the Middle East and North Africa.
Even despite the fighting and the blocking of ports by the Russian troops, Ukraine is trying to look for all possible ways to export grain in order to avoid the global food crisis.
On July 12, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky appointed a Special Representative for the Middle East and Africa to expand diplomatic cooperation between Ukraine and African countries. This once again confirms the benevolent attitude of Ukraine, which cannot be said about Russia, which sends its army and private military companies to the East and Africa to redistribute spheres of influence.
