JAKARTA: The non-governmental organization that supports the Indonesian hospital in northern Gaza has accused Tel Aviv of spreading false information to justify an attack on the hospital. The organization, which funded the hospital’s construction and sends Indonesian volunteers, rejected the Israeli military’s claim that the medical center was used by Hamas for launching attacks.
The Indonesia Hospital in Beit Lahiya was established in 2015 through donations raised by the Jakarta-based Medical Emergency Rescue Committee (MER-C).
Three Indonesian volunteers have been working at the hospital since Israel’s recent military actions in Gaza.
This hospital is one of the few remaining medical facilities in the region, having treated over 3,500 Palestinian civilians, while Israel continues its daily bombardment of the densely populated area in response to an attack by Hamas on October 7.
The Israel Defense Forces have accused Hamas of using hospitals in Gaza as operational bases. They claim that the Indonesian hospital is being used as an underground command and control center.
However, MER-C, involved in the hospital’s construction since 2011, has rejected these allegations.
Sarbini Murad, the chairman of MER-C’s executive committee in Jakarta, stated, “On several occasions, Israel has attempted to create a false public image, making it appear as if the Indonesia Hospital has a bunker for storing fuel reserves. We reject all of these allegations and believe they may serve as a pretext for an attack on the Indonesian Hospital in Gaza.”
He appealed to the international community to safeguard hospitals, emphasizing their protection under international law.
Henry Hidayatullah, who also chairs MER-C’s executive committee, confirmed that there were no tunnels connecting the Indonesian hospital to other parts of the city and stated that the hospital was solely intended for medical purposes.
It is important to note that over 10,000 Palestinians have lost their lives in Gaza since the recent conflict began.
Israeli airstrikes have targeted hospitals, ambulances, schools, and refugee camps, while also imposing restrictions on essential supplies, including food, fuel, water, and power to the enclave.
