Pakistan China Monitoring Desk IslamabadThe Taliban inaugurated a 121-kilometer gravel transit road through the Wakhan Corridor in Badakhshan province on October 4, 2026, connecting Afghanistan to the Chinese border at the Wakhjir Pass.
It is unpaved road (costing roughly 365 million Afghanis / $5.5 million), featuring four bridges, 66 culverts, and retaining walls. It reaches the border fence area.
China previously built a road up to its side of the border around 2024 (connecting from Tashqarghan in Xinjiang), but Beijing has not opened the border gate or authorized any official trade or transit.
The Wakhjir Pass frontier is heavily fortified with high-security fencing, surveillance cameras, and Chinese border guards. China continues to keep the border sealed due to security concerns regarding the region.
The Taliban administration has pushed for the Wakhan route to bypass trade bottlenecks and dependence on traditional southern and western transit corridors through Pakistan and Iran.
The corridor abuts the sensitive Pamir mountain region, close to Tajikistan and the Gilgit-Baltistan/Ladakh border zones.
Even if political clearance is granted by Beijing, turning the rough mountain track into an operational international corridor will require major paving investments, customs terminals, and formal bilateral agreements.
But it does not mean Pakistan keep the pace it is walking with !
Pakistan is supposed NOT to take it Easy !
