Renown anchor person, journalist, writer Reham Khan has said that some elements are bent upon instigating a coup in the country. A certain political party and its leader have become a threat to national security. A war of disinformation has been imposed on Pakistan at the behest of external forces.
Here it is worth mentioning that the party is PTI and the leader is Imran Khan but Reham did not cited the names. Reham Imran marriage was a surprise for Pakistanis but the separation was routine matter for them. Reham authored a book after separation in which she exposed many highly personal aspects of Imran.
“The objective of the enemy forces is to create political instability and anarchy in Pakistan. The government and institutions will have to thwart these negative ambitions. The youth should reject the negative propaganda and play their role in the development of the country, Reham stressed.
She was addressing students and journalists at a seminar on the negative impact of disinformation on national security in Islamabad.The seminar was organized by the Center for Development and Stability on March 20, 2024 at the Rafah University Campus Equivo Trust Building. Senior Defense Analyst Brigadier Asif Haroon Raja and Director General CDS Dr. Irfan Ashraf also addressed the participants and Pakistan’s Highlighted the propaganda war launched by the anti-state elements to mislead the youth.
Reham Khan further said that some political interests and miscreants have become the tools of enemy forces. A certain political party and its leader has become a threat to national security. The narrative of a particular political party and its founder is still shown on the media today.
“Fake social media accounts are being operated from outside the country and the operators are sitting abroad and trying to create a narrative in favor of a particular political party and against Pakistan. He said that there is no ban on media in Pakistan. Everyone is free to write and speak what they want, She said.
Reham Khan stated that Pakistan has been subjected to disinformation warfare by external forces aiming to create political instability and chaos. She emphasized that certain political opportunists and malicious foreign elements have become instrumental in spreading disinformation, posing a threat to national security.
She highlighted the ongoing dissemination of false narratives by a specific political faction and its leader through the media. She warned against the use of fake accounts to propagate anti-Pakistan rhetoric from abroad.
Brigadier (retd) Asif Haroon Raja gave a well-designed presentation on how propaganda is spread among the youth of the nation, how it is harmful to the security of the country and how it can be controlled. That in the present era, the war strategy has changed, social media is used as a weapon for disinformation. Our young generation is being brainwashed under systematic planning based on disinformation.
He also revealed how the European Union’s DisinfoLab has exposed over 265 fake organizations used by India to malign Pakistan globally, emphasizing the need to counter such efforts effectively.
He noted a shift in modern warfare tactics, where social media is being utilized as a weapon for disinformation. He mentioned initiatives aimed at educating the youth to recognize and combat disinformation campaigns.
Dr. Irfan Ashraf addressed the audience, condemning the propagation of false propaganda following Imran Khan’s arrest and the spread of misinformation to misguide the youth. He criticized the unjust accusations leveled against Pakistan’s security institutions by foreign elements engaging in disinformation warfare.
He said that Adil Raja and others spread fake propaganda on the arrest of Imran Khan. The purpose of vlogs based on wrong information is to mislead the youth of Pakistan.
He said they gave false news about the custodial killing of Imran Riaz Khan so that the public would be enraged. The false news of Anwar Maqsood’s kidnapping and torture was spread. In order to instigate tragedies like May 9, false narratives were created by the agents of Pakistan’s enemies sitting abroad.
Dr. Irfan Ashraf highlighted instances where false narratives were fabricated by external actors to incite public unrest, citing the example of misinformation spread during the May 9 incidents.
The participants of the seminar unanimously agreed to raise awareness against disinformation and work towards mitigating its negative impacts on national security.
The students asked questions about the subject, which were answered by the panel.
Journalists present on this occasion expressed their opinion that the ban on media is a debate and the parties can give arguments for and against.
Tazeen Akhtar, Editor “Pakistan in the World” , Member Council of Pakistan Newspapers Editors Standing Committee in Islamabad commented that as far as propaganda through YouTube, Twitter and TV channels is concerned, the concerned authorities are also responsible for it as they themselves were promoting the same media handlers and anchor persons a few years ago. It is like in some English movies the officials invent a monster and when it gets out of control the same officials destroy it.
Other journalists present said that the challenges faced by media accounts can only be adequately addressed if media people are included in the policy and decision-making process. Because there is a big difference between traditional war and media war.
