Uzbekistan — a Center of International Trust, Sustainable Development, and Constructive Dialogue
ISLAMABAD: On April 3–4, the historic city of Samarkand is hosting the first-ever “Central Asia – European Union” Summit, marking an important step toward strengthening political, economic, and humanitarian ties between the two regions.
As part of the summit, President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev held a bilateral meeting with President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. The two sides discussed prospects for deepening mutually beneficial cooperation between Uzbekistan and the EU, as well as preparations for the upcoming interregional summit and climate forum scheduled for April 4.
On the eve of the summit, President Mirziyoyev also held an informal meeting with President of the European Council Antonio Costa, during which key regional and global issues were discussed.

A separate meeting was also held with President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) Odile Renaud-Basso, focusing on expanding large-scale cooperation in priority areas such as SME development, support for women and youth entrepreneurship, digitalization, the green economy, public-private partnerships (PPP), infrastructure, housing finance, and artificial intelligence.
EBRD investments in Uzbekistan’s economy have exceeded 5 billion euros, with the majority directed toward the private sector. The parties also discussed preparations for the Tashkent International Investment Forum and the upcoming Foreign Investors Council meeting, both to be held in June.
President Shavkat Mirziyoyev continues to strengthen Uzbekistan’s role as a stable, open, and reliable partner for Europe and the broader region. Today, Uzbekistan is not only a hub of strength in Central Asia but also a vital bridge between East and West — built on mutual respect, sustainable development, and trust.
