The CIS Council of Foreign Ministers has approved the plan to declared the year 2029 as the year of connectivity between the members countries. They met in the Avaza National Tourist Zone in Turkmenistan on 07 Oct. The meeting was chaired by Rashid Meredov, Chair of the CIS Council of Foreign Ministers, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and foreign minister of Turkmenistan, the CIS Executive Committee reported.
Foreign Ministers from Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Russia and Uzbekistan participated in the meeting.
Heads and representatives of the foreign ministries of CIS member states, as well as CIS Secretary General Sergey Lebedev attended the meeting. In a restricted format, participants exchanged views on current issues on the international agenda and cooperation within the CIS.
In an expanded format, the ministers discussed cooperation in various areas. In particular, they approved a draft regulation on the “Commonwealth” International Film Festival of CIS member states. A final decision on the matter will be made at the CIS Council of Heads of Government meeting in December 2026.
The CIS Council of Foreign Ministers adopted a draft action plan for 2027–2028 to implement the strategy for cooperation in tourism, as well as an action plan for 2027–2028 to implement the Strategy for International Youth Cooperation. Council members also signed an action plan for 2027–2028 to implement the strategy for cooperation in physical culture and sports.
The Council of Foreign Ministers approved a plan for multilevel inter-foreign-ministry consultations within the CIS for 2027. It provides for coordinating the positions of CIS states at the United Nations and cooperation with other international organizations, as well as consultations on foreign policy planning and multilateral economic diplomacy.
The meeting also adopted decisions to grant CIS basic organization status to a number of institutions in the fields of biomedical research, road safety, personnel training and border security.
The foreign ministers also approved draft documents to be submitted for consideration by the CIS Council of Heads of State and the CIS Council of Heads of Government. They include a draft statement marking the 35th anniversary of the Commonwealth’s establishment, documents on cooperation in tourism, declaring 2029 the Year of Transport Connectivity of the CIS, and cooperation in the information sphere.
The next meeting of the CIS Council of Foreign Ministers is planned for April 2027 in Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic.
