The High Commissioner of Australia to Pakistan, H.E. Neil Hawkins has said , ” The bilateral relationship is built on cooperation and shared experience, scientists tackling salinity together, girls playing cricket, alumni shaping Pakistan’s future. This friendship is not just official, it’s about connections between ordinary people. And it’s growing stronger every day.
The High Commissioner noted this in his welcome speech delivered at the celebration of Australia Day in Spring 2025 at the residence on 21 May 2025. The day was shifted to other date because of unseen developments in the region.
The theme of the celebration was “Powered by the People” to highlight the importance of P2P relations in the ties of the states. A large number of participants were provided opportunity to meet and connect to one another.
Mr. and Mrs. Neil Hawkins , H.C of Australia hosted a magnificent reception to celebrate the day in a unique manner where the cultures of both countries were displayed in shape of standees and big posters including colorful fliers and carpets.
Pakistan truck and rickshaw art was an attraction there while kangaroos’ models were also eye catching. The echos of native birds of Australia was the first of its type thing observed by the guests with pleasant astonishment. The garden side of the residence was beautifully illuminated with lights of different colors that further added to the charming environment of adorable venue.
Mr. Haroon Akhtar, Federal Minister for Industries and Production was the chief guest while the Chairman Senate of Pakistan, Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani and Governor KP, Faisal Kareem Kunddi also graced the event with their presence. Many other notables from government of Pakistan, civil and military officers, ambassadors, civil society representatives and media persons were also present.
The High Commissioner emphasized the deep roots and bright future of the bilateral relationship. He said , “This relationship is powered by people. From the Baloch cameleers who helped shape Australia’s outback, to the more than 130,000 Pakistanis who now call Australia home, and the 30,000 students currently studying in Australia, our ties are living, growing, and deeply rooted.”
The host highlighted over four decades of cooperation in agriculture and water management, as well as longstanding defence collaboration. He also pointed to Australia’s continued support for climate resilience, education, and gender equality in Pakistan through grassroots partnerships.
Minister Haroon Akhtar, in his address, congratulated the government and people of Australia and expressed his best wishes for them. He spoke highly on bilateral relations and said, “Pakistan is keen to enhance her cooperation in all spheres with Australia.”
Minister spoke highly on bilateral relations. He said, “Pakistan and Australia share a longstanding relationship rooted in common values, democracy, federalism and a shared common wealth heritage. Our two countries have cooperated since the establishment of diplomatic relations soon after independence of Pakistan with mutual respect and growing engagement.”
Mr. Haroon Akhtar added, “Today our bonds are strengthened by a vibrant Pakistani diaspora. They not only enrich Australia’s multi culture landscape but also establish a bridge of enduring friendship between our people.”
“Our cooperation stands in multiple domains, from trade and education to peace and development. Australia’s contributions in agriculture and water management are making a meaningful impact. Our political, economic and defence dialogue continue to enhance mutual understanding and professional exchange, he continued.
Minister said, “The bilateral trade is exceeding $1 Billion that is great promise for further growth.
“We also celebrate our shared love for cricket. He mentioned cricket and hockey as the factors that bring both countries closer, Minister noted.
Admiring the landscape, people and their hospitality, the Minister emphasized upon the guest to visit Australia and see for their own eyes , how wonderful this country is.
